Well, I know some people are going to think it's cheating, but Hotrodders.com has an excellent thread on carbon fibre, including laying one layer of CF over a panel and clearcoating over the top. It's a trick that looks genuine, but costs very litte. Obviously it's a little dumb, in that the car won't go any faster but if you wanted it to go faster you'd spend the $600 on engine parts, wouldn't you... Check out the gallery links to see how it looks.

I can sort of see the logic. One thing (coming from a motorbike background) is how freakin' heavy the trailing arms are. I would have thought there'd be some market for cast aluminium replacements. You'd save considerably more weight that way, plus sprung weight reduction means your car handles better. Wouldn't be too hard to cast and ensure they're strong enough. You could even weld them from aluminium plate. But I think I'll just paint them aluminium colour, and tell people they are ;)

Angus, you can get cast alloy ones (KAD) from Minispares UK.
KC had some on his racer but took them off when people complained, I think.

You can also get the above from Minisport in Adelaide. Tony Cullen.

Going back to the Carbonfibre, If you want the look without the cost you create your mold apply your clear gelcoat put 1 layer of carbon fibre cloth and then build up the rest with fibreglass. You can even tint your gelcoat if you want. If you use woven cloth intstead of chop strand mat you can also incorporate a structural rigidity without the weight. I am planning on fabricating my bonnet out of fibreglass but will paint it. I also use epoxy resin and not polyester, it has greater structural properties and is a little safer to use - if you get mekp catalyst in yours eyes you will be blinded. It also doesn't shrink like polyester - but it is more expensive.

alloy rear arms weigh sfa compared to cast (or early welded pressed steel ones) they would have just been jealous.
