Awesome jon Josh really looks the goods and obviously goes hard, I think once you sort out the wastegate issue you should get much better delivery. Also ultimately what kind of boost are you going to run? I am glad also I am not the only one concerning Exedy HD clutches very sudden... :D . Will follow progress.

Cheers

Matt

Thanks Matt :D

There are still quite a few things to finish, but it's a big milestone to reach once you can drive it :)

I'm really happy with the power delivery, it's very smooth and just gradually builds up with the slightest kick. I would say it's boosting before 3000rpm - Only took the motor to 7000rpm on the dyno - may be more power higher, but i'm not too keen to rev it much more.

Dyno operator also said i was losing a bit of power running the semi-slicks - i'm going to leave it at 12psi for street use as i don't want to blow it up just yet! :) - If it handles that for a bit and the motor seems ok i'll increase it to 16-17psi for the strip.

Yea it seems that it might bed in and get a little better as it doesn't seem to be grabbing as much as it initially did..still bites though! :D

I think i need to sort out the waste gate creep and get it boosting better, just have to sort everything out..

The blow-by is a given as the motor has done 152,000km, but as long as it holds together it'll be right :)

I've been in Dans, Deans and Brads 4EFTE minis and mine feels very similar to Dan's the way it drives, both of us were very surprised how composed his car is - though this is to do with the amount of power and the power delivery - i think ~150 atw is about PERFECT for street use as you can really use the power.

When you start going much above that things get a bit silly :D but that's what we want!

well done josh fantastic job will be good to see it at the drags. 150hp is heaps should keep you happy for a few months

re the blow-by boosted motors will have more of a problem with this than n/a easyiest option is fit some pipes on the rocker cover and vent to a breathered catch tank, well thants what ill be doing anyway.

and again fantastic loks and sounds great, have to take me for a drive.

Thanks Ben, i'll pop around after it gets registered :)

Yea not sure how bad the blow-by is, just a passing comment as i can feel it when i put my hand over the breather on the rocker cover...

It's official. It's Dead.

It's got a bad knock - Piston Slap or Bearing, Most likely bearing and from investigations looks like number 2 (going right to left looking from the front)...

Sooooo i'm out of the drags :(

BUT I have another motor waiting to go in - this one has a one month warranty and they stuck a fibre optic scope in to check the bores and did a leakage test so hopefully this ones a goodun' - i'm changing the bearings just to be safe, so i estimate to have my motor out by next weekend and start to get the new one in.

ahhh, crap, wouldn't that piss you right off

I'd drag it anyway.... it's only gotta do about 2000 revolutions

(WTF you say?)

say you average 6000rpm, that's 100 revolutions per second, if you do a 14 second pass, that's only 1400 revolutions, add on a bit of time idle, and 2000 revolutions would be plenty....

 I'm not too fussed about blowing it - but i am more worried about a piston flying out of the block and damaging something exxy attached to the motor ;)

Of all the piss-poor luck Josh...................

Anyway, the good news is its only a delay and not anything terminal.

Still, you must have run over a Chinaman somewhere (Tricky apologises to any Chinamen who may have been offended by this remark)

Onwards and upwards!

Cheers,
Tricky

Yup, I kinda was waiting for it - these days the motor's are close to ~15years old - They are a good motor and i have no doubt that if you get one that runs it will last a long time of punishment.

The problem with the imported motors is that they sit around for years before they are ever used and the oil eats away at the bearings and or rusts/pits them. The biggest killer is that they are not being used at all then we go slap them in and try and crank big power - not a good recipe!

Can't buy new ones, but i would rather rebuild one up to spec which i will do one of these days..

Yes, Dean had (maybe) the same thing happen.

Haha Tricky, it does suck but at least the car isn't registered yet - would be a pain to have to waste time being regoed and to change the engine number...you learn to expect the worst when you modify this much of a car :)
