G'day guys,

Has anyone had to replace a ring gear?
Are they easy to replace or is there some tricks that I need to know?
Cheers

Here's how I do it:
1. Cut almost through ring gear with angle grinder and cutting disc. DON'T nick the flywheel.
2. Split gear off with a hammer and chisel. Wipe flywheel surface where it sat. Sit flywheel on floor with clutch running face upwards.
3. Sit new ring gear on 3 bricks (firebricks best, otherwise use dry housebricks) with chamfered edge of teeth downwards.
4. Rub top surface of ring gear with emery cloth to polish it a bit.
5. Using an oxy torch, heat the gear evenly all round until it is a dark straw temper colour. Don't let it get to blue, it will soften it.
6. Using 2 pr of tongs or multigrips, pick ring gear up and drop it on the flywheel. Tap it gently and quickly if not fully seated.

Note- you will seldom get enough heat for this job with a Primus etc blowtorch, unless it's indoors and it's a warm day. Oxy is so much better as a source of heat. The last thing you want is to have it stick, 1/2 way on...

I've done this using the wife's oven. She wasn't impressed, but I talked her into it.

You only get 250'ish degrees, but I managed to get it on anyways.

Is it a stock flywheel? You can get an exchange for about $100 inc. pressure plate & flywheel re-machined. Unless you have all the parts already, then this is not good value

I think you will find that price is for the machining only.
A NEW ring gear alone costs $85+ direct from importer (Karcraft).

Mini and moke world Brookvale in Sydney 9938 2242 Do a flywheel and pressure plate exchange. You give them your flywheel inc. ring gear and pressure plate and they give you a reconditioned set for $99. You can't argue with that!

Is that with a new ring gear?
Or is it just dressed up with a grinder?
Or is it just looked at and passed as OK?

A lot of places forget about the ring-gear when they re-face the flywheel and backing plate for exchange.

You get what you pay for. Sometimes you may even get what you want. 8)

Yes you do get what you pay and I paid $99 for a refaced flywheel that was not painted any colour. Its an option depending on your circumstances. If you are in broken hill and needing to replace a ring gear the postage may become an obstacle.
