It looks like I can be coming into the possession of two 998cc motors (unknown condition at this stage) One is in a Moke the other in the back of someones garage. I'd like to end up with an automatic so don't think I'll be needing the 998's unless I can do something with them.

They are worthless.
Send them both to me, I am happy to help out and clear your garage :)

throw in a common crank and you'd have a 2 litre v8

Someone, someday will need one - are they complete ?? Sitting on a gearbox etc ??? If so start them and see what they are like. Its not hard to rig up a test circuit to get them running. Just have someone hold the rocker cover so it doesn't tip over while its running.

I have given a couple away to needy homes and have been happy to receive the high grade neck oil supplied in return.

A usable 998 is always handy to have around for when you have a major breakdown in your own mini or moke etc , just something to drop in for 3 or 4 weeks till you get your engine done or whatever . Also they're good for the newer mini folks who want to play with one and learn about mini motors without pulling their own car apart , gives them something to practice performance mods on while still driving their own car (at one stagte many years ago I was swapping motors each couple of weeks to try out different ideas , just make sure they'va all got the same gearbox type and you're set ) .

Also , andbat was looking for one so give him a PM if when you get them .

If they are such a burden on everyone(and they are rod boxes)I will gladly take them off your hands. One persons trash is anothers treasure(and I flatly refuse to go a 1275...lol)

Hooroo

Nothing wrong with a worked 998.

Last I heard Kazjims turbo, bored and stroked 998(Car now resides in QLD) is putting out over 100bhp at the wheels for the new owner.

Not worthless, but not worthful.

Key magic number is 1275. But not everyone wants/needs the extra power, me for one would never go less than a 1275, unless I was desperate to have a car on the road, but not everyone is like me, I can see advantages, eg fuel use.

115HP at the treads I hear. It's an 1152 now, and the snail and big intercooler do help somewhat.. 8)

At last count I had 4x 998s, and 3 more that have been stroked. Sadly, one of the latter threw a rod so perhaps it's worthless now.
