hi, i'm wanting to know how easy is it to convert from rubber uni's to cooper s uni's. i was told that they are a simple swop over. but it seems not that easy, i keep destroying rubber uni's for some werd reason. is it that simple or not.. i don't want to remove the engine to do a swop of uni's

It is not an easy swap. :cry: You have to remove the engine.

The rubber unis need to be fitted correctly, most mechanics do up the nuts too tight and this pushed the rubber out of shape.
The rubber unis also don't like a lot of movement so if you get a lot of roll in corners and you apply power it will tear them apart quickly.

I run QL5000 uni joints. They are a replacement for the rubber unis. Unfortunately they are out of production. :cry: (Mine are white nylon)

hi, where did you get those uni's from. are they much stronger than the rubber ones

All the Mini shops used to sell those QL5000s but they are now NLA (no longer available).
The joint inside is a normal Triumph TR6 uni joint.
There was another version with alloy caps not nylon- maybe someone with CNC facilities (hint, TheMiniMan) might make a few million up and sell em?? :P

You used to be able to get them from good spare parts places (Repco was good 20 years ago) Actually Repco use to make their own ones with black nylon. I would bet that there are some sitting on a shelf somewhere in Australia.

I got my last one at Scotts Auto One spares in Leura in the Blue Mountains NSW about 10 years ago. Mine look like this... (not my photo)

You can actually fit new unis into the nylon cups. I think that they were TR6 or similar unis.

I reckon those caps would not be hard to turn up from alloy or nylon, the shoulder ring would need to be left as a full circle and milled out later. :wink:

You know !! While we are pontificating about those uni joints - think back - they were an absolute ning nong to fit.

The cups fell off while you were under the car on your back on a creeper and the bloody needle rollers went every where.

You would spend time refitting the needle rollers and then try to slip it onto the steel cross only to find a needle roller had moved and wouldn't let you slip the cup over the steel arm. !!!!

Yes I remember them.

They were made for Minis and Morris 1100s. They were made by Quinton Hazell and the part number was QH5000. There was a larger one made for the Austin 1800 but these will not fit a Mini.

not as big a ning nong of a job as rubber ones. Give me the nylon rollers any time as I find them quite easy to fit. Just fitted some new ones in the cooper a couple of months ago. They are ones I purchased 12 years ago for a 'just in case' situation but never had to use. At the time, they were readily available from mini sources and reputable spare parts dealers, prior to the Supercheaps and the like Auto stores. Still have the original receipt for them, $120, expensive for then but worth the cost.

These days if going from rubber ones I would not fit Hardy Spicer joints unless it's a race car with LSD. Pot joints are more reliable for a road car and give less power loss, there are more about new or s/h and they are way cheaper.
Just need to swap the driveshafts, and the diff output shafts. :wink:

No. They will last for ages. The nylon will probably never wear out. The Uni will last a lot of years but if you pull them out and re-grease them every time you have them apart you will get a longer life.

I just looked up the QH book on the net and the part number is still in the UK book. (Rover Group -> Mini)
