Anyone running this config on the road? Any quirks I need to know about?

I'm running 3-1 with a rc40 1.75" pipe. It's a great setup and works really well. I found no quirks and sounds great at the lower end I have a torquey engine and I've not had a problem at all with the 3-1's. The manifold I'm using had to be slightly tricked up and modded to fit properly but that aside a great setup for the budding or well experienced Mini owner.

ill totally agree with 1360 LS...... 3 into 1with 1.75'' system with a straight threw muffler is the way to go...

i am running 3-1 and 1.75in RC40 on the 998 in my 850. No problems or quirks, except i had a bastard of a time welding some bends together to make it clear the gearbox and the starter button terminals. most prefab pipes you can get will be for remote or rod change gearboxes, not 850 gearboxes.

if you are starting with a standard cast iron manifold, don't forget to reset your mixture after fitting the 3-1s as it will probably be flowing a bit better overall and you could have a lean mixture.

long or short Rob?

according to Vizard, the short 3-1's are good for low end torque, but are restrictive at high RPM. I can vouch for this - my dad's engine has much more rev potential than mine, and the only real difference is the short S extractors against some big bore LCB's

as for the difference between LCB's and long 3-1's, I'd have to check the big yellow book

When most of us in Oz say `3 into 1' we mean a Perry freeflow or similar- the race 3-1s are 400-500 clams and that stops most of us using one on the street. By comparison a decent Maniflow standard bore LCB is around $240, and other LCBs like Perry etc are cheaper still.

i always thought that having three into one extractors killed the flow as the centre exhaust port needed to release twice as much gas. hence the invention of the lcb. only on a super high performance motor would i run a good 3-1 system. on my race car (1275 metro motor) i run a maniflow lcb system which really works nicely with it.

Yes the centre exhaust port flows 2 slugs of gas but they are separated, so no matter.
I think it's more to do with the pipe lengths, the freeflow 3-1s have shorties.
GR's Supapipes and the Maniflow race 3-1s both have 3 long ones, but as said they ain't cheap.

Thanks guys, I have referred to the great yellow tome of knowledge and think I'll try a custom set of 3-1.

The local muffler shop will bend me up a set if I make the flange plates.

I wonder where this will finish?

Well over the cost of buying an existing solution over the counter/internet I suspect. Why fabricate your own when there are ready made solutions?

yer id only make custom ones if there was no other option, like with my old inside car exhaust. otherwise buy a set.. much easier
