hey guys, just a quickie? i recently refitted my engine, before i put it back in i got the head shaved and replaced the headgasket, i bolted the head back up to the tourque it says in the book and now when it warms up a bit oil leaks from between the head and block? could it be the wrong tourqe or have i screwed the fitting by only shaving the head, what do you guys tighten your head bolts up to?

Did you use a Payen? 540?? headgasket...is the engine 1275cc?

Provided you are using the right gasket, are you torquing it in the right order? Middle stud first, then above left of middle stud etc?

45 for studs is plent of torque. Warm her up and after a few miles, check the torque again.

How accurate is your tension wrench?
Could be you only think you are torquing up correctly. Do you have access to another good quality tension wrench to test on another bolt elsewhere or spare engine - don't just go increasing the torque on the existing bolts before knowing if it is right.

Aaron had a problem with his head once. couldnt work out what it was. he was using a cheap torque wrench with bad reading. he got a good one and it fixed the problem!

I have an "oldish" Sidchrome one plus was recently given a Repco one - about 10 years old but used once only. The Sidchrome one is miles out as I recently found out

the engine is a 1275 i tourqued up to the tension in the gregorys manual, and i followed that order, i think the tourque wrench is a cheepie, ill see if i can track down a good one and see if that fixes it, cheers guys

I always retension the head after the first warm-up/cool down, esp on copper head gaskets. This saves doing it later as some manuals recommend, I find it unecessary.

Does my method work? I refitted the same head gasket 3 times to my turbo engine, no tears and more importantly no leaks!

what gasket did you used ? i had the same problem when using the copper head gasket. It leaked oil around the pushrods, was tensioned corectly and even re-torqued but still leaked although not between cylinders. Now i use the head gasket from repco which has the blue sealing bead around it no more problems

i can remeber the name but its all repco sells

i bought the vrs gasket set on ebay ages and ages ago, so i might try buying another headgasket, because when i put this one on it wasnt a perfect fit, it was about half a ml out if that but it didnt ust slide on.its only leaking on the side of the water heater, but ill have a peek on the weekend and see what i can find, cheers guys

Many people on here have had trouble with the current crop of `copper' head gaskets available for 998 and 1098.
Changing to an ACL Monotorque one seems to solve the problems of gaskets blowing and water leakage. It is a very good composition type gasket, of similar design to the BK450 used on 1275 motors.

the block looked pretty clean and flat, one other thing i thought of is that its a 1275 out of the morrie 1100s would that make a difference? or are they the same engine.

i went to repco today to find a new gasket and the girl in there told me they would have to see if they can special order it for me...is that what you guys did? oes anyone have the part number or know where i can get this gasket from anywhere else?
