I've been told that a cam shaft from an 'automatic' will give you similar performance to a Cooper (or Cooper S) cam shaft.

Is this true And how do you know that it's from an automatic?? The rings on the end??? or is there some sinister identification mark somewhere??

Mini automatic `2 ring' camshaft is same timing and lift as a Mk1 S cam. according to Vizard.
Timing is 5/45-51/21. It's only 3/8" lobes not 1/2" like an S.
It is star drive though, to cope with the load of the BIG auto pump.

Cheers Kev.

I know it's a big ask but have you any idea what sort of cam this is. I'm guessing it could be a Mk 1 S cam and not from an 'auto' because it has a normal slot in the end for the oil pump.

Highly unlikely to be out of any S. Has lobe for mechanical fuel pump.

Two rings with 3/8" lobes is an auto cam for both the mini and the 1100.
According to the Vizard book it has exactly the same specifications as a Cooper S cam in terms of timing values and lift.

The Cooper S cam has a wider (1/2") lobe.

There are much better cams available now though if that what you are after.

Hi Mike,

Not after a different cam (at the moment), but some time back when we rebuilt an 1100 for Ribena, the guy gave me this cam and said it was from an auto. That's questionable- because of the oil pump drive - (refer to Kevs post earlier) so I was just curious to see if anybody could shed some light.

The engine runs well, except at the high revs (dont have a tacho). Maybe the timing is just a whisker out or perhaps it's running one or two flats too rich or lean. Got to get it sorted.

Have you put the cam back in, Rod?

I recon the best way to go about is put a cam in that you know what it is/out of. ie get an 1100 cam and send it to GR to get a nice profile ground into it!

At least then you will know exactly what the cam is, the profile, lift, duration, etc.

Well all the 998 1098 and 1275 automatics sold in Oz had a star drive cam. The automatics all have a HUGE pump, no way a pin drive would do it, the slotted pin would split..

re the late Rover automatics, with A+ motors, I have no idea. But all A+ manual motors I've seen have a slot drive cam.

Kev
One would assume that a "huge" pump would have a much higher capacity and be desirable in performance motors.

Why is it not a wanted item. Does it fit under the space restraints of the manual gearbox ????

I have a brand new star drive pump that I bought off Ebay thinking my MG metro cam would be star drive but it was pin drive when it got here. It (star drive) looks very similar to any other mini oil pump.

NO. :P
It sits in the usual place, but feeds into the autobox via a pipe that runs behind the torque converter.
No room in a manual...

The oil comes back up into the motor via the banjo pipe, flow direction is opposite to a manual block.
Check my 1275 block conversion' sticky in A/A+ mods.
