has anyone ever seen a van with a long range droptank fitted??? (and an acurate fuel gauge!!!)

an thinking of fitting one as i will soon be fitting 13's, therefore raisng it a litle,

just curious,

I once saw a van tank that had been cut in two and had one inch added to the middle and welded back together again. Gave something like 7.5 gallons capacity, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Early travellers had a left side mount tank similar to a Mini sedan. Fitting one of these tanks (if you can find one) would double capacity, but loses a bit of load space.

It should be possible to get a larger tank made, or maybe fit one from another car. I would be interested in getting one!

convert to a beam axle and there would be plenty of room to fit a bigger tank!

A common mod for a van is to extend the tank back towards the front of the car, ie the std tank takes up about 10inchs at the back of the car, if you have a look, there is a huge space in between the subframe that could be used to house an extended tank. It is a modification that will need to be undertaken by a welding guru, but i have seen many vans on the net with this mod. Most say that it will increase you fuel load by triple. Probably empty your wallet out to make it, but it can be done.

yeah ive had a look back there,

but it narrows, so it would need to be made like a T shape,

i was just thinking of dropping the tank and making it deeper,

but why not drop it and extend it than!!!,

the worlds largest tank in a mini????

i will visit some of the 4x4 touring shops around syd, see what they say and what they think $$$$$$ wise!

i have a crude, but cheap suggestion!
maybe one of those 20 litre red plastic jerry can's
would that fit????
could strap it up to the body
then jus have a fuel pipe tapped into the bottom of the existing tank to the jerry can
therefore your gauge could still work
(obviously the jerry can would need to be at the same level or higher)
worth a look!

you culd drop the tank but i think leagally it is about as close to the ground as a tank is allowed, you would have to check with the rta.

The cheapest solution (and I'm kinda guessing here), may be to get a second slightly narrower tank welded and slip it in front of the first, connecting them with a couple of lines. You'd be talking one sheet folded into a rectangle, welded and end plates put on. A couple of lines (one low, one high) to enable petrol and air to move between the two) and you're done. You may even find an off-the-shelf tank somewhere. I just find the idea of welding a petrol tank kinda scary.

And I've just realised that you'd need to weld two pipes onto the existing tank, but I still think it would be easier than welding the existing tank. Or not. Maybe just not go so far?

it needs to be 100mm off the tarmac!

i will soon be fitting 13's therfore raising it a little giving me more ground clearance,

i'll get a few quotes in the next couple of weeks, and fill u guys in!

as for the plastic jerry can ( i know the ones u mean!).......

(the way my gf....(kazzzy69) drives....i think it would be a hazard for anyone in 1km radius!)

Would a metal can be better. I set up a reserve tank using one of these years ago.

you could go to boat shops and look at their off the shelf stainless tanks, then get it modded to take the fuel gauge. OR you could just carry a jerrycan in the back of the van

yeah ive got a jerry can in the back, a descebt metal one,

but i just dont want to have to use it,

i have a feeling it wont be cheep to have made up, but on long trips like what we will be doing in the van soon, it will be worth every penny! (still carry a jerry!)

on the way back from adelaide with the van we stopped about every 2 hrs to fill up,
or when we pulled in to a tourist town!,

just as the guage is incorrect, 3/4 is full and 1/4 is emptty!,
