Dont you mean ... They're just not as good as originally thought UNLESS MODDED, that's all ...

When modded, sweet as.
Whats wrong with a good set of points? Nothing, use them if you want. They should be well sealed, only need adjusting once (maybe twice) a year...
Whats wrong with a good modified Pulsar one? Nothing, use it if you want. It should be rebuilt to suit (curve) and grease, etc.

There are others out there... but this thread is not 'What alternatives exist' ... its a warning... "If you use the Pulsar dizzy, mod it and grease the sucker"...

Sounds simple.

for those who winge and whine about th lucas dizzy.... ok it's not the best dizzy in the world but it's not the worst either

BUT bear in mind we are talking about a car that was designed in the 50's
some time and it was built to a price that was suited to a cheap little runaround car so 40 years later i don't think we have much of a ground to complain on especially when we are trying to get a great deal more horsepower out of a motor not only designed over 40 years ago but again with limited materials and a casting quality that is nowhere near what it is today

while the pulsar dizzy does offer some of use some hope of improvment over the classic point style you are always going to run into problems when taking a part that was designed for 1 car and sticking it into another without modification while a solution has been found to the siesing problem we have to bear in mind also that the nissan pulsar that the dizzy would have come out of also runs 10-40 oil (please correct me if i'm wrong, but i think i'm right) so i dare say we may have or may not have problems with that regard down the track
but on the other hand there is an electronic lucas dizzy availble at John Smith's mini shop down at narellan (thats in sydney) for around $200 - $250 i think

ok, the pulsar dissy has to much advance for the mini engine D4r85 has 15* which is ok for sum but way to much for others , so you really have to get it curved to suit your motor.

secondly , these dissys should really be pulled apart and given a quik grease as the bushes in mine ran dry causing the dissy to lock on the way home one day. This is mainly bad luck as i recently bought another one and was very clean and well greased inside but best to check anyway.

but otherwise they are a great dissy , just not a straight swap

In the interest of furthering this discussion, I carefully pulled apart my (2nd) spare Hitachi D4R85. My total knowledge of these units has been gained from Ausmini. I figured that these might help the more knowledgable folk here explain things :!:

This is what the guts looks like:

The hardest part of this dis-assembly was the drive dog removal, and with the correct pin punch it took all of 1 minute.

never had any problems with points, or with my mini not running in the wet.

maybe all those out there complaining about points just need to learn how to change
them properly, it really is not that hard u know

That's because the whole country has been in a drought for the past 5 years. And just wet in not the problem but the fine mist from a many wheels at speed on the open road. - try passing a semi in the rain at 100k on the highway

I'm in the same boat here. Can someone who knows about this stuff please explain, in simple terms for the :? "thinking impaired" like me, what needs to be greased and what is involved to do it.

I have fitted a Pulsar dizzy, am happy with the decision but if we have a fix to the possible problem I would like to do it. Prevention being better than a cure and all that.

Cheers

Rick

Basically you have to grease the shaft ; I'll post a pic tonight showing the mod that GR has done to get oil in there from the sump
