MR2's came out with the 3SGTE engine, in N/A and Turbo form.

More hi-po than the 4AGE

Cheers,
Tricky

Series 1 MR2 had 4AGE in Aust and available as 4AGZE in Jap. Many have been imported. Series 2 MR2 had 3SGE in Aus and available 3SGTE in Jap. Again, many imported into Aus.

4AGE 20 valve in Black & Silver top form were from Japan FWD Levin / Tuerno (Sp?). Never sold in Aust but common.

The 4A engine series had at least two distinct blocks. Both cast iron. The GZE block has ribs and was used in later 20V engines.

All 4A blocks had engine mounts machined, drilled & tapped for FWD or RWD mounting. Engines in the family include
4AC sohc 8v carby,
4AFC dohc 16v narrow angle head carby,
4AFE dohc 16v narrow angle head efi,
4AGE dohc wide angle head 16v two-types 87kw and 100 kw, two intake systems fwd & rwd. RWD only in early 87 kw type. Head is based on Ford BDA according to legend.
4AGE 20v black & silver tops with power up to about 123 kw, fwd intake and dizzy only
4AGZE supercharged 16v as above.

Formula Atlantic and some powerboat racing classes use 4AGE so there are parts available to make them rev to 9k all day and produce stupid power. Some black art stuff in the head work including inclining the intake tracts in the head.

Glen Carpenter Motors in Bris has a 4AGE engine in a subframe waiting to be dropped into a mini. It's just sitting near the office. Glen had to widen the track to suit the engine width.

(I used to own and AE86 sprinter with 4AGE, not just a random engine nerd...)

The 4age in all forms is a cracking motor but obviusly to fit into a Mini then the 20v is your best bet and similar stock power to supercharged version.

I also have widened the track to get the engine/tranny into standard length round nose front end. I hope that will not cause me any registration problems.

As the 20v has probably been imported from Japan into Oz more than the UK then I am hoping that I can get some more tuning goodies once I have got everything sorted and ironed out any teething problems.

Cheers

Rich

Mokesta,

Wasn't the 'Bathurst' version of the Series 2 MR2 (SW20) turbo charged as a factory option from Toyota Australia??

Nope, I don't think the Bathurst MR2 was anthing other than a marketing exercise. But I am often wrong.

Toyota doesn't have a history of trusting Australians. The AE86 sprinter was released in Jap in '83 with the EFI 4AGE. We got the carby 4AC because the japs thought Australians couldn't cope with the EFI. Some say it was because we didn't have unleaded then but thats balls because some jap versions didn't have the O2 sensor and cat and would have been fine. The MR2 was the same deal. Australians can't handle the supercharged S1 or the turbocharged S2. We didn't even get a proper manual gearbox on the S3. Now they don't trust us to change gears!

By the way could you actually get a 4AGE with turbo in a Mini even a Clubbie. All he VTEC / 4AGE engine conversions look so tight just taking an engine that I would have thought it impossible to add even a log manifold etc for a turbo setup without so radically changing the shape of the car hence the 4efte turbo conversions rather than 2L turbo conversions. Just wondering...

Cheers

Matt

Coolfx, Will email you some pics of the conversion.

You might also want to look at this, http://www.spagweb.com/gallery/ed_06_mr ... htm#latest it's a 16v 4age in a clubman.

My biggest problem is that I'm putting the 20v into a standard length round nose and have had to increase the track by a few inches. Not sure how I'm gonna get it rego'd when I import it, especially with 7x13's!!! I've used the standard suspension components but widened the mounting points.

Because of the extra room in a clubman I think that the engine can move far enough forward to fit the standard suspension in its standard location.

I think you'd struggle to get a turbo in but a supercharger might be doable!
