.....So, I guess the plate first shown could be a Cooper S.

In my view the plate has to be a Cooper S.
Look at the date (7/70) and look at the car number (2315) If it was a Mini K the car number would be about 30,000 not 2315.

The plate also says that it from a sedan (YG2##)
Y = Australian manufacture.
G = Engine capacity 1000-1399cc
2 = two door
# = S = Saloon
# = ? This is the important number on a mini. It says what model variant it is. But from the build date and the car number and knowing how many cars were built it is fairly easy to work out that the only model that had so few cars built after two years must be a Cooper S.

With a van the code works out as ....
Y = Australian
JB = Commercial vehicle
A = 800-999cc
V = Van
2 or 4 = the model (poverty or K)

Yeah..... the numbers are " very close! " ..... though the numbering system apparently went haywire occasionally.... not surprising. I "believe" a number of cars were back dated or forward dated for some reason in that era. One snippet of info says Car No 2000 was delivered in Aug 1970 ( 9FXEY 55361 ) Car No 1500 was delivered in Jan 1970 ( 9FXEY 54870 ) .......... just to add to confusion !!! :?

Generally the car numbers follow on fairly closely , but there are the odd ones that are way out of sequence , as you say Al . This was made possible by the fact that the date on the Compliance Plate was the date of despatch from the holding yard to the selling dealer , NOT the date of manufacture . Some cars therefore earmarked for certain dealers may have sat in the holding yard for months or more before being despatched . The best example of this was one MK2 bult in 1971 which was finally sold in 1973 and has Compliance Plate dated 9/73 !!!!!!!!!!!!! . The engine numbers as you know are all over the place ie : car number 2058 engine no 9FXEY 58514 , car no 2500 engine no 9FXEY 55783 ......... cheers :D

yes, this is definitely from a Cooper S, and my ID plate has a tiny corrosion hole on part of the 4....

this car is a very close little brother to mine, which is 7/70, and build 2286

that's a very interesting fact - as I said, I've got car 2286, my engine number is 55662 - the car numbers are 286 apart, and the engine numbers 301 apart (very very close!), but mine was built (not delivered?) 7/70 - maybe that one was delivered to WA or something - mine was delivered in Sydney, so wouldn't have sat around at Zetland for long

with that car 1500, my numbers are 786 and 791 apart respectively - cool!!

My Info on "delivered" may well be "build date" ?? However it is close enough in Leyland term to be "very Cool" 8)

According to my Mini Car Clinic cattledog,
a YG2S7 is a Mini Clubman YD022, with 1098 motor.

That should be a poverty pack Clubman. Rubber suspension, centre speedo, long gearstick, etc. Should be about 1971-73.

Just to drag this chestnut up again, I've had the question posed.

What's the deal with some of the numbers being punched from the back and others from the front on compliance plates? Is there a changeover date or is it a quirk?

I realised that they would need a reversed set of punches to normal to work from behind, they can't be very easy to source seeing that they are usually reverse font for topside use?

Sorry to drag this one back from the depths. . .but. . .

The original question in this thread was why a MkII S compliance plate would be stamped with a seating capacity of 2. . .the assertion at the time was that the seating capacity was the number of seat belts, not seating positions.
Well, another MkII S has arisen:

Image

Obviously, this one has a seating capacity of 4. . .surely they weren't fitting some cars with two belts and others with 4 at the factory. . .or was the seating capacity stamped by the dealer? OR was the original plate with the seating capacity of 2 an aberation?

rear belts were optionable when new... but the plate in the picture is also stamped from the front - I'd really like to know what the story is with that

That plate is dated 2/70.
Mine is dated 3/70, has no rear belts, seating cap is 4. It's stamped `4' from FRONT same as the one shown.
There are NO seatbelts in rear, nor attachments points to suit.
Seatbelts in rear were not mandatory until 1/71 I think.

I don't carry rear passengers, they affect the power/weight ratio... :lol: 8)

Looks like we got the set....
