No need to block it really, it does nothing unless there's a vac line to it.
Same applies to the Nissan Pulsar dizzys...

The 123 for a mini does come with the vacuum advance, but as the doc says, just don't hook it up if you have a weber or dellorto. that is all you gotta do.

Check out:

Is that only for a 123?? or is it prefered not to have a vacuum gauge linked up unless its a delorto or webber? The reason I ask is because I have 1 3/4 SU with vacuum.... or is vacuum advance different to teh gauge or is it one in the same? excuse my igorance... still very much learning about the mechicals and electrics of Mini's.

Vacuum advance is a way of advancing the ignition timing (so the spark occurs earlier, more degrees BTDC [before top dead centre]) at lower revs to burn the fuel more completely, give better economy and a smoother running.

The vacuum for this is taken from the carb throat on an SU (I think it is just after the throttle spindle/ butterfly). Webbers and delortos simply don't have a vacuum port.

With the 123 dizzy you can simply disconnect the vac advance pipe.

On mechanical advance dizzys you may need to alter the vac advance mechanism as well, as there have been instances of the vac advance getting stuck once disconnected from the vac pipe, and over advancing the ignition timing. (not good)

A vacuum gauge is an entirely different piece of gear. It is Manifold vacuum, and is taken from a port on the manifold. Usually used for an economy gauge, or diagnosing ring / head gasket / manifold gasket probs, in conjunction with a compression gauge.

This help?

$AUD550 based on the info from the website above.
You can get a lot of pulsar dizzys for that!

Mathematically that's correct, but technically not the same thing at all. The 123 has 16 user selectable curves whereas the Hitachi distributor used in the Nissan 1.6 has one curve which, for the most part, cannot be changed and is likely not correct for your engine. If you have a distributor machine and a selection of springs you could change the curve, but precious few Miniacs (like maybe 5 in the whole world!) have either of those.

Many years ago when I wrote that article on how to convert a Hitachi to fit in a Lucas hole (you're welcome!) I said right up front that the thing had to be recurved to suit the engine it was going into. The very reason I designed the 123/Mini is for Miniacs who have no access to springs or distributor machines but want a correct curve.

Sure you will notice a big improvement with a Hitachi distributor over a worn out points-type Lucas, sometimes an astounding improvement. Your chances of the standard Hitachi curve being optimized for your engine is pretty slim though. If you don't care about optimizing your ignition, then by all means do the Hitachi thang (and put a donation in the jar by my door :D )

Uh Oh Big Brother is watching
One thousand apologies sire!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom on both counts.
I am one of the many that has benefited from the pulsar dizzy. It does suit my needs for both performance, cost and reliability perfectly.
when I get to Canada I will put that donation in your jar! :D

Hi, Marcel,
I do think it's worth the do$h, considering how it works...
Wish I could afford one...
So... which curves would you start with for yer average Oz 1360 running a 270* or 282* cam, medium LCB and head work, with an HIF44 or 45DCOE??
