this may be a very simple or very complicated question but heregoes... im looking for a mini at the moment. my parents have a coopers s (new one) and i know they do 0-100 in about 7.2 something seconds with stock everything. my question is how easy is it to match that (or hopefully thrash it) when working with something like a 74 clubman? simple answers would be appreciated, hopefully positive!

not as deep as id like... but i can put money into it over a length of time so im not worried about doing it all at once of course. i actually have no idea how much anything will cost so i dont know how much i will spend... any ideas?

Do you want to stick with the A-series motor or are you keen on an engine conversion... say... a Honda Vtec or Turbocharged Toyota motor?

no, i like the idea of keeping the A series and working with that. it just seems right to me

You'd probably need 140 hp to pull that off,
and the costs dont just go to the engine, everything else needs to be beefed up to suit,
like gearbox, suspension and brakes.
You're possibly looking at over $20 grand to do it NA a-series.

My old mini used to destroy the new minis.... Once on a mini club run to goulbourn I was following a little red woody mini, we were both in the middle lane on the m5 probably doing about 70 whe in my mirriw I saw a brand new cooper s. He followed us for about a minute or two then peeled into the right lane.. It was on. I went to the left lane and we both hammerd down the M5. Got a good few car lengths on him... He ended up following us int goulbourn and came up tp me surprised as hell..... What have you got in that he said..

So yes it can be done. However that motor cost me about 9 grand and it was the most unreliable mini I have ever owned

the engine that im putting in my mini should do (redlining) 0 - 100ks in 9 secs, now thats a wee bit be hind the bini, but have you driven those binis, they are crap, they feel nice when they go round corners but they still dont handle aswell as a worked mini, words of advice, 1310 - 1380, webber, discs and spax,

i dont have much more eperience than a year but i have the discs and a reco'd set of spax and they are worth their weight in mary jane (gold)

Without worrying about top speeds and acceleration you'd beat a Bini on most tracks fairly easily without spending too much. A good 1275 for around 80 hp can cost from 2000 to about 6000 depending on engine numbers and equipment. A stock cooper s is the simpest way to get that kind of power (~80hp) but you'll need front disc brakes. Another good way is to do that 1275 and discs, upgrade your shock get hi los and bring it down a bit, get wide wheels and lighten te hell out of the car! Take out every unessary interior trim part and move on from there. Competition wise a mini is still pretty good, I beat many jap turbo's at collingrove on monday. was about 1.5 seconds behind a big ford 351 (i made up my time in the corners where he lost it) But up the first hill i was pretty close to everyone which shows that the mini takes off the line really quick but loses its go some after I think so I think you'd beat the Bini to say 60kph but the Bini would beat you to 100.

Anyone see the Top Gear episode where the Stig lapped around 10 secs per lap faster in a diesel astra than the 3 wise monkeys could in 70s exotica (Ferrari, Maserati, Lambo).

You're giving a MINI a 50 year advantage when it comes to engineering advancement, and it'll take $$ and a lot of skill to over come this.

That said, it was bloody great to see 13secmini win that Dyno shootout over the JCW car.

Mid range in 3rd gear is my torquey around town gear for cruising up hills at the speed limit but to really blow the doors off from a start, once the wheelspin is undercontrol hit about 6000 in first then to a bit over in second 6500 is probably the highest I;ve been and I'm too scared for my poor little engine to go any higher.

buy an mg metro turbo engine, not quite as nice as an NA engine but if your only interested in beating a bini in the 0-100 sprint go for a turbo
get the turbo worked etc etc should go alright.
cost alot of money though. you should be able to out corner the new mini's, and thats where the fun is for me.
