Guys, questions.... I have a 1330cc A+ with a 45mm DCOE13 Weber.
I'm experiencing what i would guess is fuel starvation.

I shall endevour to explain the symptoms as best i can. So here goes...

First things first, if i drive sedately then i have no issues.

If i boot it (ie: accelerate hard) and keep my foot on the loud pedal for an extended period, then by the time it's taken me to go from 0 to 110km/h the engine starts to lose power. At this point, the more i put my foot down the less power it has. I'm guessing what's happening is that i'm opening the butterflies giving it more air but it's still not getting fuel.

So the only thing i can do is to whack it in neutral and coast for a while with the engine at idle. By the time the traffic has caught up then it's good to go again. I've got power again.

I've got an electric fuel pump. It's a little one. I tested it today by timing how long it takes to fill a 500mL container with fuel. It took, 28sec. So that's approx. 1L per minute.

I have no idea what pressure it is pumping though.

I pulled the fuel filter off and checked to see if that was blocked. It looked pretty clear and it was easy to blow through. A bit of compressed air through it didn't blow any dirt or anything out either.

My mate gave me this big **** Carter fuel pump that i'm thinking of fitting. I've also got a Holley fuel pressure regulator too.

What fuel ideal pressure should i be running?
Should i fit the regulator up close to the engine or close to the pump? Near the pump will be easier.
What flow rate is good? I'm assuming this new pump will be more than adequate.
And have i missed something? Could it be something other than the pump?

stock cooper s will take, happily around 3 psi, im using that, i was running about 4-6 but that was too much for my SU's, but for a DCOE regulating for up to 6 psi max may work try a few differnt pressures, definetly above stock for you, so about 6 would be a goer I reckon...anyone on here know much about DCOE fuel pressures?? Drmini?

Hmmm... i just pulled the regulator out of the packet and it says it's rated for 1-4 PSI.

The Carter pump is rated to 8 PSI max.

2.5-3 psi I think is right for a DCOE Weber.
I run a 45 DHLA Dellorto (similar carb), the little square Facet/TRW 3psi pump has no trouble supplying enough fuel for ~125HP. 8)
My filter is a Purolator, at the carb. No regulator used.

This maybe a shot in the dark, but check the fuel filler cap vent to see if it's blocked or tank vent. Had similar problem years ago on my cooper with dellorto. It would suck like buggery on the gad then die for no apparent reason

Well i've bought a new pump and fitted it (with help from Mini87). I bought a Facet brand pump that's rated at 2.5 - 4.5 PSI. I ran out of time, and space in the engine bay, so i'm not running the regulator at the moment.

Took the car for a test run... took 1st gear to 6000rpm, 2nd to 5750rpm 3rd to 5800rpm... soon after i shifted into 4th it the engine suddenly went BLEEHHHH and lost almost all power. This time the power loss was a fair bit more sudden and dramatic. With the old pump it would splutter and sort of die in spurts. Now it's like "bang, no power"... but it doesn't go bang as such, just using the word to describe how sudden it is.

Dunno what the problem is now. :?

being that it is a facet pump does the ticking from the pump get louder when you are in top gear after you have been through the gears, have you checked the tank and the pickup in the tank, where in the car is the pump located, it should be in the rear subframe as facet pumps do not like to lift, they will do it but if abything is wrong on the supply side they will not supply enough fuel to the carb for sustained full throttle use, its not about pressure it is about volume

If putting a suction side filter on a Facet (or any pump, really) it needs to be a bigass one with plenty of filter area. I use an EA Ford one in Barney (1293, twin HS4s) no problems.

feralsprint... when the engine is running, let alone at high revs, i can't hear crap above the exhaust and the weber. So i have no idea what the fuel pump is sounding like in top gear. :?

The pump is located directly below the fuel tank bolted onto the subframe.

drmini... i'm running one of those ryco filters up near the carby. So it's not on the suction side.

How old is that Ryco, they do clog up when old..
And is the pump mounted so the fuel flows uphill at 45* like they recommend?
Having said that, one of my pumps is mounted horizontal and still works fine.

<edit> Feral, the square Facets just buzz, give the same noise whether pumping or not.

Doc

My square facets were very noisy when trying to suck fuel up and every one I have ever heard if fitted so it has to lift is noisy untill they prime themselves, come to think about it so do the round ones as well untill they prime themselves :D

The Ryco's age is unknown. I took it out to see if it was blocked though and fuel poured out freely. I blew some compressed air through it and nothing nasty came out. It looked ok so i put it back on. Blew through it with my mouth and it was really easy to blow through.

I've mounted the pump horizontally because i didn't read the instructions. I dunno if i was supposed to mount it 45deg or not. Why would that change anything anyhow?

As for the noise it makes... it kinda makes a tapping sound when it's not pumping fuel and then it quietens down to a muffled ticking noise when it's got some fuel to pump. I wouldn't really call it a buzz.
