If some guy charges you $900-$1500 or $250/hr to tell YOU that YOUR car will not KILL YOU, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR FRIENDS or anyone ELSE because of how YOU have modified it, then you can thank him that YOUR life is so bloody CHEAP.

What price would you have him put on YOUR life?

sure some of you don't give a rats if you live or die, but he also has a responsibility to the rest of the community - and that includes me BTW - so be thankful that the couple of hundred thousand people you drive past in the life of the car are also so cheap to NOT KILL.

All the above is fine IF the Engineers you pay to point out whether your conversion is well engineered and safe....actually do their job. From what I've seen and heard, some just do a risk assessment based on whether they think you are capable of doing the "right" thing, sound like you know the rules and maybe whether you are capable of following good engineering practice....at best..its a lucky dip....do your homework before undertaking any conversion...its YOUR life.

Sorry bit OT, but while we're talking about engineers, can anyone recommend on in Sydney?

there are a couple in the engineers sticky.

i agree there is no price for one's life, however, from looking into motors for the mini, prices vary greatly.
was wondering if it were the same with the engineers.

the one that i had the initial consultation with sounds the goods, but my inexperience leads me to question the price, rather than get ripped off.
he is $175 per hour, located in sydney and has 20years experience with BMC, which i thought would be the goer.

from what i gather, can you log all the work you do on the car, and just use the engineer to certify it at the end? or do they need to do any of the labour (if it can all be done without them, assuming we stay within the ADR etc)?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the way it works, you do what you've got to do and then get the engineer to look over it at the end.. They'll either pass it or fail it (for what ever reasons). Some people choose to have the engineer involved throughout the process, so they know exactly what to do (where to reinforce, what is not safe/strong enough, etc). This is obviously more costly in engineering fees, but it'll probably save you in the long run. It'll be just as expensive if you fail the engineering report, have to reconstruct huge amounts of your work and then pay the engineer to look at it again.

I am an old fart so I think I am allowed to say here what I often say elsewhere....definition of experience can mean.....25 years doing something the wrong way!!
