that should do as long as it suits a 4 cylinder? really its a personal choice as to what you like the look of best? smiths guages always look right in a mini though! :D

any tacho will go onto the mini as long as you can switch it on to four cylinders. smiths guages are awsome, ive got them (all except the tacho funnilly enough) and they are great!

Smith Guages look the part, but most i've seen aren't terribly accurate (unless they have been rebuilt)

They don't seem to have much in the way of dampening and the needle wanders all over the place.

I can rev my car in neutral to 4-5000rpm and my autometer sportcomp tach is smooth and accurate and get's to the peak rpm well before the stock smiths tach does (though it does get there it's just delayed a bit).

Worth noting that it is illegal to have any guages mounted above the top dash rail..

Hmmm well what about the ricers etc that hang 'em off the A pillar...
Back in the 60s, it was common and LEGAL to fit them on the dash, so is this an ADR thing, or what?

Yeap, they are illegal too..

I think basically the car is ADR'd with a certain amount of visibilty above the dash and your placing things in the way..that and you can hit your head on them in an accident..

Probably can get them engineered though..

I picked up a tach out of a MG midget for about $10. I made a pod out of some stainless pipe, and mounted it on the steering column. It looks really good, and since its Smiths it matches everything. I will post pictures of it a little later.

I would recommend going that route.

Will an 8cyl smiths tacho work on a 4 cyl engine?
Anybody got some clues?
It does not have 4,6,8 switch
