Yeah i think the AWD setup is on ebay? I've forgotten, i get so confused looking through all these different classifieds. Looks good and sure beats a Cultus AWD setup for price. Does anyone know how strong or how goog they are? I'd say they'd have to be stronger than the Gti gearbox to be AWD. I was thinking of doing what skssgn is doing and just chopping a hole in the rear subframe. Shouldn't be that hard. What about the exhaust though?

Is that you Striped that has sent him a PM? I would love to see some pics of what he has done and a price.

Regarding the legal issues, surely you could sell the subframe on the basis that you are not liable for any damage/injury caused from the use or misuse of the product. I know that FIT, a mob that do a fair bit of Supercharging stuff for commodores have a little disclaimer saying that they take no responsibility for what their pulley kits do to your engine. It seems like an easy solution. Can someone please enlighten me.

And sorry for hijacking...

Not me. GTI's are far too slow.

But.......I have posted it as it really would be a SENSATIONAL conversion. They are a great motor and its not hard (read as not overly expensive) to get 200hp outta them turbocharged. The Gti is a smaller motor than the GT Starlet but it does have its own issues.

I think the best option would be to get the G16b motor, which you can pick up for next to nicks, turbocharge it and that would be a force to be reckoned with.

When doing the Gti/Gt Starlet (or any other) you are able to 'rotate' the motor and g/box to get a compromise between driveshaft angle and getting the necessary clearances around the motor. I suspect that once you attach the tailshaft your ability to 'position/rotate' the motor in the engine bay will be diminished. Unless you are building a new exhaust tunnel the shaft has to be positioned somewhat centrally on the existing tunnel. In doing this (not building a new tunnel) you limit your ability to position the motor three ways:

side to side - tailshaft needs to be central (ish) on the tunnel

forward/backwards - gearbox/diff/prop shaft output needs to be in a position to go under the steering rack

rotationally - the gti is a VERY wide angled cylinder head so needs to be tilted backwards. g/box being attached to the motor being tilted means the diff will want to point at the ground. This is why i think the g16b should be used.

Actually, Honk, are you listening?

Sure are mate :D I've actually been researching the g16b motor (with maybe the dohc gti head on it), as there is a cheap one for sale near me. How good would a turbo g16b 4wd mini pickup be!
From what I've read the g16b isn't as strong as the gti, apparently it doesn't have a forged crank. Some people say they're crap some say they're terrific.. It's hard to find out exactly.

Heres some pics of the one on www.miniboost.no

Looks like they could only share the exhaust tunnel up to a certain point, then exit the exhaust at the side. and looks like they've made a custom rear subframe.

In this last pic you can see where the exhaust exits:

Just remember, there is more then one way to skin a cat. What might be an ideal solution in one persons mind may not be in the eyes of another.....

Had I not sold my Gti setup I would have gone awd/4wd. But hey, theres always a next time right

Ahh Stripey, if only eh??

Anyway, onwards and upwards right??

That AWD setup is now for sale on eBay, here:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4643841832&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Read carefully and it says its off a 1600cc 4WD sedan - ?? (so, is it 4WD or AWD??)

Personally, the G13B is getting a bit dated now, and as Stripey says, the engine can be a bit of a trial to fit with its wide DOHC head. My preference, like Stripeys, would be to mate the AWD system to the G16B, and use all that wonderful torque available, dont worry if it cant rev its nuts off.

Once turboed, it would be a little powerhouse, and easily enought HP to deal with most of the ricers out there. Not to mention constant AWD power delivery.

It would be a shame if one of us with a GTi conversion, or attempting to do one didnt pick this up.

Regards,
Tricky

Only downside to the g16b is over all the motor is not as strong as the gti.

I pm'd the guy about the stuff, but he said he's had an offer of $1000 USD so I'm not sure if he's pulling it from ebay or not..

Honk,

Or puliing it out of his arse or not!!!

I am not a Suzuki mechanic, but I do believe the G16B is everybit a strong as the G13B. Show me someone who has snapped crank on a G16B??

The G13B only got a forged crank due to its higher rpm redline.

IMHO - I would take torque over high-end hp any day. And by turboing it, you would get the higher end delivery, to compliment the lower down torque. G16B wins hands down for me.

An added bonus would be in that the installation would be that much easier. Also remember that the G16B is a 16-valve engine, so it breaths really well for a donk that doesnt have DOHC.

Regards,
Tricky

....and if its being force fed flow isn't as important.

So. Is that 1000 USD including the awd/4wd gearbox? If so that is a steal.

JC,

If indeed that is a verified offer - not BS!!

What would you expect to pay for this setup??

Regards,
Tricky

Well, if it were me, I would expect to be compensated for relieving the vendor of the dead weight. But given that I am the generous type, I would take it off his hands if he paid me for the fuel to come and get it.

Strange them suzuki boys. All of them are on about how hard the gti motors are to come by and how expensive they are. If you play your cards right you can by plenty of them and plenty cheap.

The cultus boxs seam to fetch the dollars. If indeed it is a cultus box rather than a 1600 awd box it would be worth some money. I've seen them asking stupid money for them on redline (i.e $2k +, just for the box)

Shits and giggles aside I would say that $1000 would be a reasonable price for a box/transfer case, tailshaft and complete rear-end..........

the usual reason why people say the G16B is weaker is because they drive it like they drive their GTI. ie trying to reach 9000rpm between shifts.
in saying that, for some reason, the people that have the 1600 conversions in their swifts do say that they dont last as long. the extra torque does help, but i can tell you for sure that my 1400 pulls like a train. you dont need bull crap amounts of torque when converting a mini. the body weight jsut doesnt warrant it. granted you can make a neat city driver, but even the G13B's drive round sedately in traffic. its really personal preferance what you choose to mod. B13B or G16B.

I had a 93' Suzuki Swift Sedan 1.6L [2WD]

I can assure you I absolutely thrashed that car, i mean THRASHED it....

I had it serviced every 6 months and it ran perfectly.

It never blew smoke, didnt leak oil. Only problems I had was the clutch going, and also the computer died.

I have seen some huge amount of power be found in the 1.6l engine, dude in sydney had a great example until he took out a giveway sign with it.

Well that's pretty much sold it to me! It would definalty be a fun project trying to get it in anyway.. talking to skssgn, he said you'd have to split the floor and make the exhaust tunnel larger to fit the drivetrain and exhaust. A bit of welding here and there I guess.

But the main thing I guess is the rear subframe? To me it looks like the only option in suspension is coil overs and custom made radius arms.. So a bit of work is definalty involved. Also I believe it's possible to put the gti dohc head onto the g16b, I've heard different stories about any benifits though.

Don't quote me on this but I think the cultus box's come with a stock lsd and are much stronger. Which is partly (besides being rare and imported) why they fetch big dollars.
