I can't speak for other MINI owners but the new Beetle doesn't concern me one way or the other.

As for your criticism of BMW you need to get your facts straight before posting.
BMW took over Rover, asked them what their plans were for the Mini brand and were told nothing, Rover planned to let the Mini die as regulations made it harder to find markets.

So it wasn't BMW that killed the Mini it was Rover and their lack of investment and vision of a future for the Mini.

Rover was sent bankrup by the owners who bought the company from BMW for a pittance then simple bled it dry, taking out millions for themselves instead of investing in the companies products and workforce.

I've never been a fan of BMW or their cars but I am really glad that they took over the Mini brand and produced the MINI.

yeah true, but some things need to be discussed, and mabey with a better understanding (and that goes both ways) we all might be able to get along.

I don't agree. BMW bought Rover to pilfer the Mini brand and the Range Rover suspension system so they didn't have to design one for their X5. Once they molested the company they gave away the skeleton.

I was pondering the following today and thought I would get other people's opinions on it....


One of the Mini's greatest attributes is that is it a classless icon, appealling to all parts of society.

Therefore my open question to all, is some of the anti-MINI sentiment a result of it being owned by BMW (a brand that has a reputation, deservedly or not, for a particular type of owner), and therefore have the appearance of the classic's reputation being highjacked by silvertails

I think that sums it up fairly well. BMW make no atttmept to diguise the fact that MINI is a marketting tool to deliver younger customers to the BMW brand, so (rightly or wrongly, love it or hate it) they have positioned the car in the "potential BMW owners" market. That's not to say that all owners are from this group, but it certainly their target.

But I suppose, i ts also true that its far more accessible to the masses than the rover was. (in this country) so it might not be perfect, but at least we have it. A new mini was always going to be a compromise. It could have been owned and built by Austin Rover, been ugly as sin, and short on R & D or perhaps owned and built in Asia and sold for $15000 with 5Yr warraty. Under these situations, then i guess we'd have different sets of people that think its all wrong. I just think it would have been impossible to please everyone. (unfortunately)

yeah my question was answered ages ago, as to where they went, i was just letting the thread keep going, as per ausmini traditon to let it wonder, and there were some things which need to be said, needed to be expressed and needed to be sorted out...

...and some things still do.
