Hi Simon,

They still have gaps, that is a split in the ring to get them on.

But the metal composition of the ring means that it doesnt expand as much as gapped rings and therefore dont need a gap to allow for expansion without binding.

The ends of the ring just butt up to each other and there you have it. A lot of high-performance cars have them now as it limits the risk of blowby and therefore ring groove damage.

Cheers,
Tricky

I have actually seen pistons that screw apart where the groves are and you actually put rings on without splits in them. pretty expencive, same kinda idea

HP,

Never seen that before.

I have seen one-piece rings where you superheat the rings and cryo-freeze the pistons and the rings slip, one colls the other heats up and badda-bang badda-boom, one-piece rings on pistons.

Specialty item though - big marine diesels etc.

Tricky

I actually used them on a Nissan 2l turbo a few years back. They came ex Japan and were low compression pistons for a 2.2l stroker crankshaft. they were the only ones I could find so I could use pretty big boost with the stroker. once all the rings were in place I loctited a grub screw into the side of their thread so they never come loose. Tricky stuff. But the motors still going well with 75K on the clock. They were called screw top pistons didn't think much of it when I was building the engine.
