reliability would be of more concern for interstate driving...the vtec one would crap on the 1100 for reliability...

Pretty much any modern motor is likely to be more fuel efficent than the old A series (the a series wasn't advanced when introduced into a mini and it hasn't changed all that much since) :( but it's a hellofa lot of money to do an engine conversion just because it's more fuel efficent, you'd want to be doing some miles to recoup the costs

Most engine conversions are done for other reasons :P

dunno about that...my prelude ate through petrol like nobody's business when i hit vtec at every set of lights...whereas my old 998 wouldnt go through much more than about $15 worth in a month (with the same driving distances) the prelude would chew through about 5 times that...ofcourse it was a 2.2L engine as well :P but that doesnt exactly scale right in my books :P

I was thinking it was more like comparing a crocodile with a thouroughbred,

Crocodile dates back to the dinosaurs and has changed all that much since :D

that said: pound for pound the vtec (b16a i believe that one is) could probably be classed as more fuel efficient...you get a helluva lot more bang for yer buck with the b16a over the 1100 (or any a-series for that matter)...that's for sure...i'd consider it a much better package all-round...uses more fuel (not heaps more but it is a bigger engine, 1.6L vs 1.1L) but you get about 5 times the performance and an order of magnitude more in the reliability sector...its worth doing IMO :P

My 998 clubby gets about the same mileage as my 2lt camry (I tend to drive the mini harder I think) and this was doing quite a bit of stop start stuff upto 100km so accelerating to 100km/hr wasn't the 998's strong point (great around town at 60km/hr though)

Fuel effecentcy is VERY strongly related to the driver behaviour.

i tend to thrash every car i own :P vtec really does cost you at the pump...you could almost watch the digital fuel guage go down as you drove it in vtec...was really well setup though...man i miss that car :(

I think we need to consider efficiency v's economy.

Honda's are highly efficient, as are top fuel dragsters. However, not very economic (top fuel dragsters).
