FWD = nose heavy, strong tendancy to understeer

so manufacturers reduce the rear track to partially balance this
still leaving the car with understeer (for safety).

Just looking at the difference in track width for the camry over the years... (I drive a camry) and the difference is not all that much ie 60.4"(rear) vrs 60.8"(front)

Just wondering if the mini's short wheelbase comes into it.

Also that link you gave us they were talking about increasing tyre widths as well as increasing the track widths which makes the discussion rather confusing :?

so is THAT saying that less track on the rear reduces understeer?

I believe so.....reduce under steer, promote over steer (comparitively) - either either

So spacing the rears out will cause more understeer
or spacing the front too far out & leaving the rears stock will make it swap ends!

I've learnt something - time to rest brain :)

Hear here!!!!!

The one thing that pissed me off with my 13x6's under sportspack arches was that the rear tyres were not even close to being level with the edge of the arch, unlike the front.

I would assume that you could counter-balance the widened rear track by fitting a rear sway bar.. :?: (Rear sway bars are said to increase oversteer in front wheel drive cars)....... so, my guess is......

Widening rear track increases understeer
Widening rear track and then also fitting a rear sway bar should basically cancel each other out. The only thing you would gain is kerb weight

Does this sound about right???

while to diference in track made some slight modification the the handilng.. i drove one of my mates cars. the fully adjustable setup ( front and back) whas just bolted on ( late night fitting  ) and then cause the lack of time he just eyeballed the settings.

jeez that thing handled like a pig. it was a bit wet and the thing handled like a 80's porche 911.. understeer understeer..OVERSTEERRRRRRRR..whoops pretty close encounter with a lantern pole.
unlike my own car wich starts to run wide . then you either back off the go pedal.. the tail follows. of left foot brake and add power ( which is a lot trickier than it looks when you see Walther Rohrl do it :o )

so the rear tracking and camber setup seems to make a way larger impact than track itself

Yes, the whole discussion on track difference is given that
the rest of the geometry is set correctly with decent bushes etc.
otherwise you would be throwing some random factors in!
