Try "dzus"

They are the type of fastener used to hold the side covers on mokes.

1) always use stainless Dzus fasteners and preferably ones with a hex rather than flat screwdriver groove. Moke ones don't have either and bodywork scratches and difficult opening result.

2) According to the draft code of practice for light vehicle modifications (on DOTARS site) that will be the national rules and replace the state ones, flip fronts will be perfectly legal. The rules are actually a bit light on for detail for monocoque cars where the front structure is important (scary IMO). If I remember right there is more concern about headlight aiming than structural integrity.

is it still all steel. or have they used other materials as well?

and if so. how much does it flex, it looks reasonably solid!!! 8) 8) 8)

Yes all steel. Once it's on and all clipped in it's pretty sturdy. Can't hear any rattles or anything.

The only thing I would impove on in Marvins case, is having a diagonal brace going straight from the bulkhead to the front of the subframe instead of the one that is currently there.... triangulation would be much stronger.

Dont forget that you would need to rewire parts of OR the whole front of the car (lights, dizzy, alternator) if you want a front that comes off completely..... I used a pre-fab 30A trailer plug and wires from supercheap to do my old silver mini. Worked beautifully.

Mine was not a hinged setup - to work on the engine I needed to unplug the wires, pull out 4 clips and slide the front end up and forward off the pins, then put it aside. It used only 4x bonnet pins and clips to hold it all on. You can see the front ones on the subframe - I used the original subframe mounting holes (and I used skateboard wheels between the subframe and the fibreglass as soft spacers. The were a perfect fit.)

A couple more pics of it here ----> http://www.cardomain.com/ride/538621/4

And more info/pics from all over the net..... http://images.google.com.au/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2005-09%2CGGGL%3Aen&q=mini+AND+flip+front+OR+flipfront&btnG=Search

Due to:
1) the fibreglass front (they dont like em here)
2) Sloppy seatbelts (pre-tensioners were stuffed)

I guess it was asking for it.

I had a brainwave, over the weekend:

well, my panels aren't in the best shape, so fibreglass would be cool, but yeah it shrinks, and it flexes and really prone to cracking. not the best stuff for the front of your car.

Then I was thinking a bit more into the problem and thought carbon fibre or like a coloured carbon kevlar, with a fleck of the rest of the car colour in it.

anybody thought of this, and more importantly know someone who could do this?

i would love a carbon (or similar) front too...part of the reason i have decided on a predominantly black mini is that i wanna have a carbon bonnet and boot and maybe door-skins if i can manage to get it engineered...and hopefully have it match the black well enuff that it wont look like some riceboy jizzed all over my car...the issue with carbon stuff (especially a front) is that its probably gonna cost a FORTUNE...like...mega $$$...i wouldnt think you'd get much change outta $3000 for a stock looking carbon front...that wasnt a crap job...and if you even nudge a shopping trolley at fairly low speed or have a bingle of any description...its gonna be totally rooted...would look cool though :P and weight a bit less than the steel panels...

Kit cars like the Cobra and othere use a full idependent chassis, so unlike a mini or any car that is unitary construction the body is not considered a structural part of the chassis

so by spaceframing the subframe at the front and replacing the structural integrity afforded by the front panels of the car it wouldnt more or less be the same? i am sure you could get it engineered to be compliant...

If you have enough time and money you can get any thing passed, but its up to the individual to decide whether its worth the effort

Theoretically you can get a fiberglass front engineered , since COrvettes were (still ??) fiberglass and kit cars can be engineered with fiberglass panels . It's still up to the engineer to approve the specific one though and normally they're concerned with how much it vibrates or moves with the headlights attached . Don't forget , in a kit car or corvette the lights are mounted on a non tilting panel . Providing it's stiff enough and safe then you should be right 95% of the time .
