Can Someone let me know where is the best place to run the vacuum line for the distributor from. ie: direct from manifold or from the carby. I had it running from the nipple on the carby but there is not a lot of vacuum at that point, so I have it now running direct from manifold vacuum, and it seems to run ok. So I just need to know if manifold vacuum is the way to go?

Running it from the manifold is not the correct method, it will give far too much advance when it shouldn't. That vacuum nipple on the carb is the correct connection to use, on our Oz antique A series anyway.
The vac advance is essentially an economy device to advance the spark at small throttle openings. It must be inoperative at full throttle.

Some A series (even with an SU) never had vacuum advance fitted, examples are Cooper S and some 1275 & 998 motors of the 70s with 43D/45D dizzy.

If you have a Weber or Dellorto sidedraft carb- forget it, there is nowhere to hook it up to work properly.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I think I may go back to the carby method, or I will probably drop in and see Neville, the local Mini Guru

Dear DrMini,
Thanks for the advice on the correct place to get the vacuum from, but do you think you can help with this one? Before I moved the vacuum take off from the carby, when I turned off the key after the engine has been running for a while it seemed to want to keep going, ie. "running on". Since I have shifted the vacuum take off to the manifold, now, as soon as I turn off the key the engine stops straight away. Something strange is going on here I know, and it shouldn't be a compression issue, as the engine is fitted with 8.5:1 pistons. It also has electronic points. Any Ideas??

what kind of carb are you running?
the HIF44 on some cars seem to do that due to the vacuum take off was on the wrong side of the butterfly causing it to advance the timing even when the throttle is totally closed causing running in.
you will have to have a look and if its on the inside of the butterfly then its just a bit of tuning and if on the manifold side then it needs to be diconnected and the take off point needs to be moved to the other side of the butterfly.

I run mine without a vauum advance and still 13.5km per litre on a 1380.

maybe doc can help a bit more.\

Jai I've PM'd him already. Could be the diaphragm in the vac advance is FUBAR and when hooked direct to manifold, it's got an air leak. That would kill the run-on pretty quick...:)

Those of us running Webers & Dellortos can't use one, anyhow. Nowhere to hook to, and the vac pulses are too violent in each port to be useful.

Economy? With all the solvents in 98 octane etc now it evaporates without even driving it.

well after the last price increase another 5 cents after the 6 cent increase a week before they have now decided to drop 96 octanea nd only supply 95.
you can get 98 at a premium $1.55 a litre and avgas is only $1.75 a litre.
I just gave mine a treat the other day but seemed to get a bit of a flat spot when i accelrated, so off came the airfilter and a cleana dnaoil and all good again.
will get to drive/race her in the next few months a few times so keep you eyes on the website i should be able to get some decent footage of what we get upto over here.
