ok guys, i went to my local parts supplier (the tip) yesterday and there were various gemini bits sitting there , so i thawt what will fit a mini ? anyway i grabbed the starter motor and its sitting on my motor in the shed now ;)very easy and worthwhile mod , just TAKE YOUR TIME filing out the holes so that they are straight. also will the twin piston calipers fit on a mini ? i know thet they have the same pads as a cooper s, but will they fit? i can get them for free, if they dont fit they will go on the

Ben I looked at fitting Gemini calipers a year or 2 back.
Yes they look `very much like' Cooper s ones but fitting them would take some work.
Major problem is where the hose connects- on a Mini it would be facing the CV... :cry:
Mounts are different centres and offset too.

Might be possible to screw a plug in, then tap another hole, but you still need to mount it etc... pads are smaller than S, too. Honda Civics is an easier solution! 8)

Yeah I've been running a Gemini starter for about 12 months after the solenoid on my Lucas one crapped itself. Definitely worthwhile and an easy 1.5hr job.

its basically no different to a mini one - it just sounds newer..... theyre still old though. But yeah, worth the swap for sure.

I can't fit one- my S oil cooler is in the way.

Unlike Oz Mini Lucas starters they are pre-engaged type- no bendix to get jammed, so when they get old the overrun clutch probably fails instead! :lol:

Yeah, that's what I thought!

I guess it comes back to wanting that sleeper look hey Doc?

I've seen a Mini in Nth Parramatta ( I think he is connected with the Morrie centre in Barney Street) running a cooperS with no grill and TWO oil coolers - one in the original spot and one external to the engine bay (mounted off the bumper bar). Not sure if it was used for Oil or water but if he can do it, surely Doc can!

I run an S cooler in the usual place. Nowhere else to put it....
I've now got a UK rebuilt starter, Landcruiser 550CCA battery, and a Pulsar dizzy- no starting problems! :wink:

the gemini is a high torq (compared to the mini) starter motor the one that was on the 1330 in the clubby had probs starting it so whaked the gemi stater in and no worries maaaaaaayt

I had mine rebuilt a few months back (new drive pinion etc). Now the motor just spins when I'm trying to start it without engaging the flywheel. When I took it out I found that the drive pinion doesnt have any of the spring action on the internal sleeve. Ie when you twist it away from the armature and towards the heavy main spring it doesnt go back by itself. Could this be the cause of it not engaging?

Its probably been covered already but before I run a search what mods does a gem. starter involve? Can I still use the Lucas solenoid?

The gemini starter has it's own solenoid which sits on top.

You basically take your old one off, get the gemini one and slot the mounting holes inwards until it will bolt up in place of the lucas.
You then connect up the wire to the solenoid and the main power to the starter.

Depending on your wiring, you may have to join the two wires together on the "bridge" which mounts on your block (Ithink this is what you are calling the solenoid? - the black thing that probably has two threaded studs with power from the battery on one, and the power lead to the starter on the other. I just bolted both leads onto the one thread on mine and it worked first go.

I paid $35 for mine from pick'n'payless and it proved to have been rebuilt by the look of it 8 months earlier.

oh yeah i think the ekky starter fits aswell and is the same as a mini starter

Then you'd be replacing one lucas for another - is there an advantage in that?

Was the escort starter higher torque or something?

theres never an advantage in replacing lucas with lucas :p lol
