Just venting a little steam.

So I went down the local brake specialist today to get some new bleeder screws for my newly painted calipers, and to also ask them about making a hose for the upgrade.
Firstly the little bastard are almost $5 each, and the screw used in the repaired hole costs $9.50! What a rip! Then they can't make a hose for me caus they need a dimensioned drawing showing fittings and sizes. I said there (I had the caliper and drum brake hose there) I just need this fitting (pointing to imperial mini one) to split into these fittings (pointing to the metric metro ones) over this length (pointing to the hose) and the guy goes on about still needing the dimensions and what I want from them. So I think I will just make something to suit myself. Just before I leave he tells me the now hot looking calipers I have will not pass any roadworthy anywhere, simply because they have paint on them. I said whats the problem, its proper paint and he says he didn't know. SO I dropped in on a roadworthy joint on the way home and he says the same thing. They not legal cause they painted. I asked why, he said he didn't know.
It's fine if it's the factory paint, but apparently you can't even respray them!
SO this is leaving me up the creek with no paddle, however a rather expensive set of calipers. I was told to strip all the paint off and leave it off, but then they will look loke crap before too long.
Now lucky for me I have a set of 8.4s here however they are in need of a total rebuild too (more money I don't really have at the moment).


SO anyone have any suggestions for me or want to vent steam on their own stipid legalities? Please humour or inform me on what headaches I can expect in the future.

I would spray them with a can of fast drying packing ink(black). Then tell the RWC it is the factory paint. when finished zI'd wash off with my pressure cleaner.

This is what I would do and not advice.

My advice... leave the paint on and leave the wheels on. I reckon when they look at the whole car and if you don't point it out to them then they won't care and you'd probably pass roadworthy.

If you ask them specifically if it's legal or not they are obliged to go by the book. If you don't then they could pretend that they didn't notice if the authorities ask questions.

Oh and remember it's not the full price again to get the car checked out the second time... if it fails you can just strip the paint and get it retested. If it passes then you're laughing.

find a different brake place for a start. if they can't do it having all the parts there in front of them then i would not trust them. if you were in sydney i could recommend someone

Unbelievable.......the only possible reason I can think of is....that paint could somehow obscure a cracked caliper casting ....

it couldn't possibly be that VHT paints are supposed to transfer heat....and therefore could somehow stress the casting......nah

Never ring up RTA, Vicroads etc and ask these people anything- you never know who you will get, and will likely get their OPINION.
If they can't quote you chapter & verse # from their `scriptures', don't believe them.

Ring them up and ask them "Can I remove the paint off my brake calipers?" And see what they say.

Better Breaks in Bayswater are fantastic. They are supplying me parts for my mini every other week and know what they are doing really well (we also put alot of business through them from my workshop and never have a problem).

Painted callipers... vicroads are a bunch of wankers.

do what i did.
i puit on metro brakes with ap racing 4 spots..they were resprayed in metalic gloss silver..looked the ducks nuts...no ne said anything just tell who ever askes they were like that when u bourght them..they will only possibley look at them it they stand out too much...say bright red??or yellow...plus take it to a roadworthy place your mini mecanic says is good..
link automotive have there own guy who knows minis well...and will pass stuff like this as he did on mine....like one guy i took it too said my brakes would need engineing..as they wernt mini equiptment???link said bull doggy doo....thats crap...there standard on metros...i never had any problems..if concrned paint them black like told by others this way they will look normal...

Yep you should really of masked up the pistons and seals before you painted them though, you now have paint on the psitons and paint on the seals which they dont like

The paint comes off easy enough because there is still grease on the seals.
The paint on the metal retainers should help prevent rust.
