im currently in the process of stripping down my car (a '74 clubman ) and wanto know what was the best way u found to be the easiest way to remove the paint from the car and the methods you used .

and other tips todo with paint would help

to do my engine bay in the van i too it back to bare metal using an electric drill and a coarse wiere brush attachment, took off old tar and paint with ease!

im still yet to do the exterior though...ill be paying attention to this thread aswell!

i use paint stripper on all large areas and a small sand blaster for the areas it cant get.

I tried stripper, and it took five coats to remove shag-all. Plus the stripper went behind strengthening bars & ribs (I was practicing on a bootlid), when I couldn't see what was happening or get all of it our, or recoat effectively.

Sanding it off takes a LONG time and scratches the surface, probably makes the metal a bit thinner too.

Paint stripping wheels (like 3M fibre disks) on an angle grinder are, I think, the best. You don't remove steel, you don't have toxic mess to clean up or wash down the drain, and it's cheaper. It depends on how much noise your neighbours can put up with. One thing: Use them carefully as if they catch an edge, they get ripped up pretty quick. Wire cup wheels are also good, and more robust although when new they can scratch up the metal a little.

Another caveat: I rooted my DeWalt angle grinder by using it too long - POS. So I bought a cheap B&D which works just as well, but cost 1/4.

well here's a fun tip for all those budding nutcases, i was paintballing today and we were joking around saying we should play inbetween the cars, untill the owner told us if you left the paint on the car to dry it works like paint stripper! so you could have a bit of fun shooting your car with different colours, pretending your on acid for a day while driving it around then wash it off with the original paint coming off aswell.

If there are layers and layers of paint, the ideal way is to paint strip it until you get close to bare metal or until no more paint can be striped then electronically sand the rest with a very fine sand paper. It's a bit messy but the work pays off.
Tips when using paint stripper is to lay out wall paper around what ever your paint stripping as it won't burn the paper. When you do start removing the paint put the crap that's scraped off into the wall paper and simply roll up and throw out. Do not strip the paint over the grass as it will kill the grass and could start a fire.
