I believe the box i have is a 3 speed (its out of the car at the moment) How are they to drive? I have never driven my mini as i got it as a givaway and am just starting to restore it. With all my wild and crazy ideas i am now leaning towards the same three speed with the 850 motor. I am thinking i might do the following things to it

a slightly larger bore mainly just to clean it up along with new pistons

a larger cam is it possible toget extra cam bearings instaled as running it staight on the cast is a little daunting

Then i'll play around with carbies i have a single and twin su already.

Then i'll finish off with extractors

What sort of speeds/performance will i get out of it utilising this engine and box i dont really want to be revving the tits of it to get to 100k it would be nice if it would sit on the highway nicely. Will it keep up with todays traffic?????

100kw out of an 850 would be...incredible...i am gonna be getting a reco'd 1275 bored out to about 1380 with a bunch of mods and probably a supercharger...i'd KILL for that setup to get 100kw at the fly...stock it will drive pretty good on the highway...no need to go to the extreme if thats all ya want :)

That's 100 km/h not kilowatts

Yeah sorry i meant 100 km/h

As i have never driven an 850 with a 3 speed i was just want ing to know how it's drivability is by todays standard. I was thinking i would keep mods relatively low.

The only time you will see 100 is if you are going downhill
with a strong wind behind you (or a Mack truck)

Go with a 4 spd all synchro box - you can always keep the "magic wand" change if you want the original look.

As for engine, 998 & 1098 are cheap (everyone wants a 1275).
I would go one of those, but you could always cobble an engine together using your original 850 block & stroke it using a 1098 crank... but your plain 850 with a decent g'box might be OK. Been years since I drove an 850, & I'm not a big fan (my minis both had 1275s).

The main problem i see with the 850 block is the camshaft bearings do you know if they can be installed on the other journals??????

All Mini gearboxes are 4 speed, but early ones up to 1968 are 3 synchro (ie no synchro on 1st gear). From then on they are all 4 synchro.

Oh i was thinking it was only a 3 speed box. Can you change parts within the box to make it a 4 speed synchro or do you have to get a whole new box?

yeah my 998 has a 3syncro box under it...funny story...there's this HUGE hill up here near my mate's house in enoggera...that pretty much any car can make it up...we got my stock deluxe (998 and an 8000mile rolled over clock ie. 108,000miles) loaded it up with a full compliment of passengers (one weighing 140kg) and got a big run up...got to the top speed of the car just before the bottom of the hill...then gradually down changed as we lost speed...about 4/5 of the way up...in 2nd...givin it all she's got...but she's losing speed...crap! we're not gonna make it...just as the car is about to stop i slam the clutch in and shift it to 1st and crawl over the crest of the hill...not even a single crunch outta the box...was a lovely change if i do say so myself :-D my mates were all pretty impressed we didnt end up rolling backwards down the hill :P

top speed of the 998 deluxe is about...95ish i think...

The 4 synchro casings are different, as are lots of internal parts.
You would need a new box. 2 types, either remote shift or rodchange.

geez i hate living in townsville no mini parts available at all i will have to try and get a new 4 speed box from down south and from what you say i will have to have a second hole in my floor for the new changer.

And i still don't like the idea of a car that wont do the speed limit grrrr
848.............998..............1098 i just don't know what to go with but i want to make the right decision before i start spending cash

all the engines should be able to get you to 100kmh, don't let that be the decidding factor.

My 2nd mini was a 998 and it had no problems doing 110 on the freeways.

Personally I don't like revving the bearings out of my cars either, so you'll be looking for torque, which means long stroke, which means 1100 if you stay small bore. Put that on a 4 syncro box with a 3.4:1 diff and you should have a comfy cruiser
