Maybe it was a way of saying he didn't want to do it? Take the hint and go elsewhere. I was quoted $3000 to paint a brand new van shell which is in perfect condition. They didn't have tp mask anything as it was absolutely bare and dead straight. I will now be doing it myself.

My brother got his roundy painted... Full bare metal job, inside and out, floors, dash, engine bay, boot, the lot. Factory Indigo blue, white roof. Acrylic, this one, and the whole job came in at $3500. Bloody nice job, too.

willy just got a quote for around 3k to do his deluxe, and that'll be a NICE job.

I think this guy needs a good slap in the head. $12-25000 for paint? Stick that where it fits, buddy.

yeah keep in mind that a great show job could cost arund 15g though but it doesnt sound like thats what you want so i wouldnt take it to someone who is more into that market which sounds like he is
Hey if people are paying 25000 for paint jobs from him he must be good and good luck to him but i wouldnt and i dont think you sound like you want to either
and your right can you imagine parking a 25000 paint job at the shops and comming back to find a trolly next to it

i agree with the people saying he does not want to do the job. I got a full bare metal respray under bonnet, inside, outside, underneath etc... with the stripes over the whole car aswell as dent removal. the whole thing cost a little over $5k. Pretty good job to.

the thing is i am more worried about the bodywork than the paint job...i want the body to be back to perfect...no rust...no bog (it doesnt have any yet)...and be nice and straight (which it is...but i want it kept that way)...then i want dents taken out...a few little bits of rust attended to...and then painted...the right way...it doesnt need to be show quality...but i'd like it to look as good as a new car...say...the nissan 350z's paintjob...factory..

.thats all i want

update: i sent him an sms this morning informing him of the fact that i cannot afford his $12,000-$25,000 work...and said that $6000 is the most i can spend on body and paint...he said no...then suggested that i strip the body of paint myself...which would apparently make it cost around the $6000 mark...depending on the extent of rust found...which...strikes me as odd...

should i do this? i mean it will save me money no matter what happens...but dont you need to be fairly quick after you've stripped it back to bare metal? otherwise it'll start rusting like instantly? right?

You can apply a coat to stop the rusting, after being stripped... Nearly every car out there on the road will have some sort of bog in it! If rust if cut out and a new plate welded in, once the welds have been grinded back they will need something to smooth off the finished surface...
$25,000 is a good indication that he dosnt want to do the job, you were saying that he had already done someones mini, for around 5k. Maby he learnt that the 5k quote was massivly under quoted so he's learnt from his mistakes...

Yep everyone has got it right the guy doesn?t want to do the job simple as that. I had a budget of $5000 for mine and it when over but I was happy. There was about 160 hours worth of body and paint work done on it. $55 an hour is about the going rate for labour but don?t forget you need to factor in supplies of paint etc etc.

My total bill was about $14000 but I didn?t pay that as he got a bit carried away so he wore most of the bill that went over my original quote and if he didn?t he was stuck with a $14000 mini shell that in a fire sale people would only pay a few grand for so it worked out for me in the end.

I searched for a panel shop for ages as I do work in many panel shops and none of them wanted to touch it giving me silly quotes like $25000.

You shouldn?t have to resort to doing some work yourself even @ a $6000 job so if you can try to find someone else but I feel your frustration.

You guys have got me scared, my floor pans are rusted out, i have rust holes in the front quarter panels, rust holes along the back edge of the roof (panel van), the bottom panel at the rear in front of the fuel tank is rusted, and other numerous rust holes in the door sills. I think this will be atleast 50k i might have to sell my house hehehehe

I wish i was good with a welder :(

the weird thing is right...as far as i have found...there's almost zero rust in my mini...there's the odd bit here and there...but nothing beyond surface rust...

the floor pans L&R have both been replaced...you can see where the new bits have been welded in (a bit of a bodgy job but meh...) the panel work shouldnt exceed $2000ish...which leaves $3000 for paint in my original budget...

it will be hard to get a job as good as a brand new car 350Z i have heard that factory jobs are usually better as they can put in a hotter oven type thing to dry as there are no rubber parts at all when they paint the shell unlike most cars getting resprayed with dashes wheels suspension parts etc
they will melt as the heat is too high
