When my car dropped the exhaust before the 2 go to a one (in the extractors) it sounded like a harley. woke up half the neighbourhood at 9:30 at night to get it onto the ramps to re-bolt it after i got towed. i know what you mean!!!! are you getting twin or single hotdogs?? either way it will sound good...

I got two 9" hotdogs. Havent got under it to have a look yet, but one is forward and one at the back Im hoping.

The verdict...

Bloody hell the weber is loud. I thought the exhaust would be loud but Im amazed. I dont remember the weber being that loud before, probably coz I only ever had a single hotdog before, it must have been louder than what I have now. The exhaust sounds great, but its definitely not loud. The weber on the other hand..... :) what a noise! I love it.. when you get to about 3500 revs the exhaust starts to compete with the weber for noise levels but up to 3500 the weber is winning hands down :)

It was idling a little high so I adjusted the idle speed, but its not quite running right yet as it backfires through the carby when I put my foot down and Im guessing is running lean, as it feels like its starving for fuel through the mid range or when I try and push it.

I'll be reading up on how to adjust fuel mix next/tomorrow. I'll get it to a tuner ASAP but I dont want to drive to Perth if its running really lean...

Finally, have the exhaust and weber on though :)

You must be stoked to have it all together :D

I had a single hotdog with a weber before, and the exhaust was loud enough to drown out the induction noise. Your exhaust must be a bit more civilised.

possibly too civilised, I'll just have to wear them out b faster :)

Ive been reading bout webers, mines making a sharp pop through the mid range under load, I'll check all the nuts are done up tight tomorrow and make sure there arent any leaks at the manifold.
One thing I dont know about is the breather pipe out of the rocker cover. It used to feed into the SU but now it goes nowhere.. will that effect how the car runs? Does it need to be blocked off?

No, don't block it off unless you have a vented oil filler cap.
The blow-by gasses in the block have to go somewhere...

You could always get yourself one of those $50 alloy oil catch cans.
They come complete with a filter/vent & hoses for that price.
Was thinking of getting one myself

You could run a pipe from the rocker cover vent back into the webber. The base plate for the filter has a little plug to attach it. I've done it with mine, and I guess under heavy use a bit of extra top end lubrication couldn't be bad...

Cheers Ray.

Thanks Ray, where abouts is that exactly? Next to the fuel in pipe?

Also, can you guys tell me which screws to turn and in what direction to make it run richer?
I have adjusted the green circled one for idle speed, but Im not sure if that effects the mixture as well?

What do the pink and yellow screws adjust?

I havent connected the choke yet, but might get around to that one day. I did check that the choke was fully off though.

and I have the old venturis if I need them. I think they are 38's or there abouts and the ones I now have in the carby are smaller, possibly 36's or 34s. It used to run great with the old ones but when I got the weber rebuilt they thought I should go smaller for better mid range torque. I just want to get rid of the pop backfire before I drive it any long distances to get t tuned properly.

Jill, the yellow ones are cover screws- just hold the lid on the bowl.
The pink ones are the pump jet caps.
The 2 idle mixture screws you can just see, below the pink ones in this pic.

Thanks Chris, yeah that would be great. Thank Doc also, do the idle mixture screws adjust how rich the carby runs in general? or are they just for the idle mixture? I know thats probably a really stupid question, but the idle is fine its just the mid/high range that I would like to try richer/leaner/play with at this stage.

So Im not going to do it, but if I were to replace the jets Id get them out of the pink screw holes?

And if the idle mixture screws can make it run richer. screw them right in first then adjust them both out at the same rate equally and see how it goes?

The jets are under the cap held on by the wingnut, the larger ones are the mains, emulsions and air correctors and the smaller ones are the idle jets, if you are having problems with it not coming of the idles to the main circut you may need to change emulsion tubes

the only problem is it backfires (sharp pop) through the carby at about 2000 revs when accelerating.

I cant just adjusts the mixtuire to run a little richer to see if that helps?? ie the two screws below the two pink circled screws? :?:

or shall I just put the old venturis back in? Do they have to be calibrated or just a clean swap? Im guessing they are accessable after removing the air cleaner element?

The srews only adjust the mixture at idle, now as doc has said the screw adjust the amount of fuel being allowed in when the car is idling, once you touch the throttle they have no effect as the fuel airratio is then controlled by the size of the jet in relation to the amount of air allowed in by the butterfly.

Try adjusting the screws at idle, set the idle at about 800-1000 revs, first wind the screws all the way in and then wind them out 1 turn, should be ok to start the car, warm up the car and then try winding the screws out 1/2 a turn each, if you have to wind the screws out more than 2 - 2 1/2 turns its a pretty good indication that the idle jets are to small, it should run best at about 1 1/2 -2 turns out at most if it doesn't remove the idle jets and go up to next size

hope this helps you as its hard to describe fully on here

Jon
