I?m in the process of fitting a single HS6 to my Elf, and am having trouble sourcing a suitable filter set-up.
Originally I was just going to keep it simple and fit a trumpet and sock, however most suppliers don?t seem to do one short enough for an HS6. So then settled on getting Keith C?s set-up, but he can?t get stock of the base plate for a while.
I know I could just fit a cone filter to get me by, but they really do need something inside to get rid of the right angle.
Anyone got any other ideas, or aussie/NZ suppliers for a short stack?

I think K&N do an offset cone one too.

Not sure which part you mean? The filter? Or do they do a pipe of some sort (couldn't see one?)

Sorry, I just meant the filter.... if you are pushed for space.
Not sure about stubstacks for HS6 although I made some 45mm Weber/Dellorto ones once.

K & N do an offset filter to suit a mini - but only for 1.5: SU not 1.75" .

It's a good setup, and one of the best filters you can get - those ramflo's are shithouse.
You just need to get the file or the die grinder out and ream the hole in the baseplate to suit. Fit's even with a long manifold, so if you have a fairly standard manifold it'll fall in no worries.

Just be careful to make sure you ream out the baseplate enough, and also include the smaller holes around the air intake that need airflow as well.

....I can get a cone filter. What I'm after though is something inside it to sort air flow. If you fit the filter on it's own the air is doing a sharp right angle into the carb mouth.

i have a k&n 1.75 offset cone with a substack that i made my self. it was made using some 5mm thick alluminium and done with just a drill hacksaw and file

Fair enough! Heaps better than nothing.....might have a poke around the garage.....

But I also might have found a sourse for short trumpets for 7 pounds.....which even with freight is under half what they sell the longer ones for over here...

For what its worth, at the recent MCCNSW meeting, Graham Russell spoke about stubstacks on carbies on mini motors. He said that while the stubs improve air flow on a test bench, they do [u][b]nothing[/b][/u] on a running motor.

He also showed us a 1.75 carby that he spent a great deal of time making a radius on the mouth, soldering and flowing the butterfly etc etc only to find it made no difference on the motor.

He said SU simply got it right when they designed the carby even though a HIF has a slightly radiused mouth (probably to appeas people who insist the mouth should be radiused.

Yep, GR might be right there with regard to SUs- but I'd point out that Webers & Dellortos are a different kettle of fish. Low speed drivability is much improved with stubstacks or trumpets on these, as it improves mixture control. I can feel the difference with/without them.....

Yes - sorry - I forgot to specify that he was talking about SU's at the time when the subject of stacks came up.

He is not a fan of webers except for all out racing.

hmmm.....interesting reading. I'm the first to admit I'm talking theory rather than practice. I've never messed much with SU's (but am about to!)

GR actually make his own short stubstacks for Weber, they won't fit anything else though!
I like Webers & Dellortos- once you find where it's rich or lean, you can simply change a jet or air corrector. Or, drill a jet out- their sizes are in mm.
SU's only had about 800 different needles @ $20 each, at last count....
