Pulled a mates mini out from the back of the garage last weekend. He has had it hidden away for about 4 years. The short time he used it before putting it in storage it was quick, REALLY quick. Anyway it's a 1275 motor that has been overbored & I think has lumpy cams (whatever that means)

Anyway he's really not sure what was done to it. We got it fired up but the plugs were all fouled up...gave them a clean and no go, found ONE that was ok in the shed and it got it going. It was REALLY rough running though, Im guessing 4 new plugs will help (already ordered) but he thinks there is an issue with the weber side draft it has on it.....there are 2 dials (well flat head turns them) that he was turning trying to get it to mix properly. I was sitting in the car watching and as he had the filter off (actually goes into were the dash usually is  ) I could see the fuel igniting and flashing when he reved it etc. Does any of this make sense??

What I could take off the weber was "Weber Side Draft Tipo 40DCOE19 9880 No"

Does that mean anything to anyone??

Cheers

Yep it's a 40mm sidedraft Weber..
I'm a Dellorto man, but tuning the Weber DCOE is pretty much the same.
It needs the right idle jets, emulsion tubes, main jets & air correctors to run properly in a Mini.

If you can find out what's in there now, and choke (ie venturi) size we can make an educated guess at what the problem is.

BTW unlike 99% of other carbs, those 2 mixture screws on Weber and Dellorto sidedrafts are for FUEL, not air. So turning them out makes it richer (at idle and just above).
Maybe he's just drowned it with a rich idle mixture...

Never heard of a 1237...would have to be a really bored out and/or stroked 1098...or destroked 1275?...or just isn't right in the first place...

The webber is sitting through a hole in the firewall...

I don't know that much about them though..

It was running right at one point some Im quite sure it has what is required on it to work properly. I'll try and get some pics this weekend, maybe that might help identify some bits?

The carb barrels end virtually where the firewall ould be so in turn the big filter pops into the car and fits virtually in the dash 8)

If it's igniting at the carb end, doesn't that mean it's running lean?? I had this problem until I figured out that my idle was too lean... or was that the other way around and it was too rich? :? Too early on a friday...

I'd take that carb apart, someone has hit the aux venturi in LH barrel witha BFH or something! No wonder it's running funny...

Damn Straight.

the other thing other than what Dr Mini has said.

Could it be stale fuel. if the car has been sitting there for 4 years the fuel would be stale.

Dump the fuel, drain the lines and fill up with some new stuff.

Not sure if it can help, but that is what i would do.

This looks the same as mine, can anyone tell me which of those screws will adjust the fuel mix to make it run richer please?

I adjusted the idle speed (thought I did) all I moved was the screw stop under the actual throttle lever. Does that only change the idle speed?

Jill, idle mixture is the 2 screws nearest the manifold. They have springs under them. IN is LEANER, OUT is RICHER. They are fuel screws not air as in most carbs. Adjust equally from the full in position.

Just had to fix a set of Dellorto's that had aux veturi that looked like that left one, was one hell of a carb fire that caused that and the only way to fix it is a total bebuild including replacing the burnt venturi and maybe the choke if its started to melt to

ah, I posted a pic with colour coded circles in the other thread bout my weber swap.
I adjusted the little screw down near the throttle lever, thinking its idle speed. The idle mixture is different huh? Its idling fine but has a sharp pop backfire in the carby at about 2k under load. Can you check the pic in the other thread and tell me which screws I can play with to see if I can remedy that. Please :) Thankyou in advance :)

See my reply in other thread. If popping under load it may be too lean in the idle jet, which supplies fuel above idle too.
Is this popping at part throttle, or full throttle? You might just be giving it too much welly too soon...
