 Post subject: 1275 A+ or Not

Hi
I was wondering how i can tell if a 1275 is a A+ or a standard 1275 and what i could expect to pay for a A+1275 engine, i really only want a Head, block and crank but think it may be cheaper to buy a complete engine (not going) and rebuild it.

this would be better in mini mods mini chat or wanteds
but round 900 would get you a compleat running a+ in need of possible rebuild

well i heard the A+ were the good engines thats why iam after one, and i can get a A+1275 for $600 and a standard 1275 for only $500 + freight on both, please let me know your opinons as i need as much help aas possible

We never really got A+ motor's in Oz, except for the last of the mokes in the 80's, In my opinion they are overated.

Someone got a bit stingy later on in life and the A+ block castings were never as good as the early one's, the block tends to be more porous than the early ones.

Now the A+ gearbox is a different story, it has a few more design improvements such as a thicker layshaft. Again there is nothing wrong with a proper built standard gearbox either..

They are still a good block, but I would sooner buy an earlier one, Especially if cheaper...are these prices complete with gearbox? or what are you getting for that price?

If you are going to overbore it big, an A series is better. Many, many A+ blocks got sleeved at the factory due to casting faults.

The A+ has a few differences you might find a disadvantage down this end f the world, like the main bearings are different and would require very light engineering to fit off the shelf bearings down here, also the rings are not available anymore and would require engineering to open the ring lands up to suit ACL/hastings or other mini rings, the gearboxes are really good but have a real bad habit of chewing up the 2nd gear syncro teeth (bugger to find good 2nd hand ones) also the gearboxes have really long ratios which are great for town driving and also highway driving but to try to get any sort of high performance with quick acceleration the drop between 2nd and 3rd is huge and not worth having.
They also have the issue of triple collet groves on the valves which were not the best for high revs.
As a whole tho they are a good motor and have more potential than most other mini motors depending on what you want ot use it for.
my 2c and my out look is if you can get one but it as it is a lot newer and should last quite a bit longer as long as the machining is done right to start with.

MMMmmmm,,,,i`m not a big fan of em,,,for the very reasons given above,,,i can`t count how many i`ve seen pourous, &/or allready sleaved, , but the non pourous & non sleaved ones that i`ve found have been pretty dam good...just that i can actually count those ones & i can say that i`ve seen soooo many A+ donks, probly more than most people

the early 1100S (1275 non-sideplate) & 1275 moke blocks would have to be the best ever produced, & if you can find one , the early 1275 Clubman GT also, they were originally a side plate block just like the MK2 Cooper S , but after that short run they turned into non-side plate donks :-)

I am a fan of the 1275 automatic blocks tho,,,,easy converted to manual & would have had very little stress ever & most are pretty stock bores still,,, if not maybe only .020 thou oversize,,,hee hee,,,perfect :-)

OH!!! & to have an idea of what they look like,,,,the A+ engines have a huge array of extra "WEBS" cast into them,,,sort of Criss/Cross pattern of casting webs all over them & quite often have a breather catch can on their timing cover & &&&& los of other minor differences not really worth noting tho

But,,,when you think about it,,,you may well find that the earlier 1275 (1100S type) non-sideplate blocks will be getting much harder to find than the A+ blocks now days anyways & also even the A+ ones are quickly drying up in england too,,,so if you want a 1275, just don`t be too picky & get one before they dry up totally & people start charging even more than the stupid prices that they`re allready selling for now

There was once a time when i`d buy a complete driving morris 1100S (1275 4 doors) for $20,,, no kidding,,, $20 !!!!!! & that was only if they left the new battery in the car :-)

Yeah those were the days Matt. We got a Clubby once for $75, all there.
I once bought a Deluxe for $100 or so just to get 4 good door hinges, under the back seat was a MotaLita wheel. Bargain... :lol:
