What is the biggest inlet valves you can use? Can I just put big inlet valves in and leave the exaust valves if they are fine?

Yes AFAIK

I think the trend with bigger inlet valves is that you will get more power but your fuel economy will suffer if you don't increase the size of your exhaust valves as well. Alternatively you can increase the size of your exhaust valves and leave your inlet valves this will give better economy but less of a power improvement.

So bigger inlet valves greater power but a loss of economy (compared to if you had increased the size of the exhaust valves as well) most head work as I understand it will get bigger valves for both but it is valid to leave the exhaust valves the same, which leaves more room for bigger still inlet valves.

I hope all that makes sense (my understanding from Vizard's yellow book, no practical experience )

With a 202 head, IF you are porting it and reshaping the chambers, Cooper 998 inlet valves (1.219" dia) work good.
Or, you can fit 1.250" race ones or 1.312" Morris 1100S ones. But the latter are around 2mm longer, and so the springs need a washer under. I use 12mm ones. But watch out- the cheapo Chinese washers are too thin.

Exhaust valves- if the valve seats are good, go with standard ones (1"). If they are worn you can fit oversized 1.062" ones (~27mm), or unleaded seats and standard valves.
On big ported 202 heads I have also used 1100S (ie Mk2 S) exhausts turned down to 27mm. Any bigger and they will maybe hit the top of the block..

If running 1100S valves, I leave the (1275) guides up 1.5mm and put 1.5mm packing under the rocker posts.

Before anybody asks, NO- I'm not in the porting business for anybody else. I'm retired (sort of...)

Hmmm.. First car was a Morris 850, back in 1964.. sez a lot don't it...
I did an apprenticeship in fitting & machining at NSW Railways, then worked for my cuz in law repairing Formula Vees Formula Fords & VWs, then got a welding ticket or 2, worked a few years at AWA, did a production engineering certificate, then spent 29 years at Rheem Australia as project engineer, then welding engineer.
Retired Xmas 2003... got bored, now I'm back on the tools, building conveyors 3 days a week....
But through all this I still stuff around with Minis, can't help it- it's a sickness, I tell you... no cure... :?
