Doc, I was given a tip the other day..... I thought it was handy.

Quote:
Yep...grease up the interior walls of the port, seal off the manifold side, pour in some latex mold-making compound, let it cure, and then carefully work the latex casting out (so as not to tear it) through the valve side. Voila, a perfect 3D model of the port. Much easier than mucking around inside the passages with calipers for measuring cross-sections, eyeballing and strategizing, etc.

The latex cast can also be used to measure the total port volume: true and seal both ends of the molding, dunk it in a graduated container and note the displacement. As they say, watch the professionals at work...there's nobody lazier. If an easier way exists they will find it.

Since pushrod heads usually have left and right-handed ports, you will want to make a copy of each. Also, at the points where you think you have what you want on the flow bench you will want to make a latex copy of that too, to protect your work and expedite duplication. From the casts you can make your port grinding templates. I use sheet aluminum and plexiglass -- IMO cardboard, masonite and suchlike are too fragile and imprecise. And who knows...if your heads work maybe you could sell a few sets of template plans to other poly-philes.

In the USA latex mold-making compound is available through Chicago Latex Products. I don't know what they use down your way, but any decent pattern-maker or prototype shop should be able to tell you.

why alloy over cast iron?
i know that they cool quicker, are lighter, less porous
but isnt alloy brittle and more prone to fatigue

Duc if it don't move, it won't fatigue..
Seriously, that's not a problem with alloy heads. Corrosion can be though. Need to run coolant, not rusty tap water like most Mini owners!
Oh, and don't cross thread the spark plugs in alloy heads.. I know a guy who did just that with his Porsche Turbo! Was nasty and $$$ expensive.

thought it was along those lines...

but what kind of dill starts to wind in a plug... in a porsche... and finds it just a little tight, and only to get tighter...

Yeah he was a dill- he put it in the plug spanner and wound it in! (On a Porsche flat 6 the plug holes are not exactly visible...!)
Note that on 8 port Mini heads they are under the inlet manifold, and go in sideways like a Chevy.
Moral of story- always wind the plugs in a few turns with your fingers first. If they get tight, something is wrong.

I wonder what the different types of sands they use for the moulds and cores are.

I'd love to have a amateur foundry.

Put your hand up all those here who have not got themselves cross-threaded at one time or another :?:

....if you haven't, then you haven't been cross or done enough threading in your life...sometimes....no matter how careful...well....uhhh ohhh

For a start (get it? start) you can buy something second hand that already has a couple of start points on threads somewheres.....it can be all down hill from there...

well heres the latest mail from minisport - anyone game to send one to GR?

"MINI SPORT ?7? PORT CROSS FLOW CYLINDER HEAD up date 18/6/05
We are proud to announce that after many months of work, testing and checking the prototype castings, the Mini Sport 7 Port Cylinder Head is now ready for sale. The first production batch have been cast and are being machined and checked to guarantee a perfect product.

Forged in cast iron to the highest standards, this is truly a cylinder head to enhance any performance engine from fast road up to full race specification. It has many fantastic features that make it one of the most attractive additions to any Mini, not least of all that it fits under the original bonnet without modification.

Its advantages over other heads of this breed make it the winning choice for the original A-series tuner. Using 7 ports (4 inlets, 3 exhausts) optimizes power achievement along with compatibility with all the currently available 5 port performance parts.

Twin inlet manifolds are cast one piece with the head, and in standard form these accept two twin barrel side draught 40mm carburetors, or alternatively they can be opened out to suit larger 45mm carburetors. We are also developing an injection system to suit.

Retaining the 3 exhaust ports allows any widely available ?A? or ?A+? series type exhaust manifolds and systems to be used.

Likewise any A-series cam (standard or competition) and any valve train components fit straight on.

Thanks to 1.2mm of extra space between valve centerlines, this head also accepts big valves. Or if standard to slightly oversize valves are used, the risk of cracking between inlet and exhaust are greatly reduced.

The 7 port cross flow head has shown great success in real competition, as it was fitted to all the top Danish team works cars.

Under tests carried out on a standard (with the exception of 1.5mm rockers) MG Metro, the head increased the maximum power to 100 HP. This huge increase is due to the use of 4 inlet ports and the cross flow construction.

We also have a 7 port head fitted to a hill climb 1380 Mini, with a full race engine and Weber Alpha injection system, which is producing 150bhp +, with only a 10:1 compression ratio. So, as you can see the potential is massive!!!

The first cylinder heads will be ready for dispatch in less than 3 weeks, but with a waiting list already in force we will be supplying the heads an a first come first served basis. If you don?t already have one on order, and you would like one, then ordering soon is essential as the waiting list at the moment is 4-6 weeks. All those who have one on order will be contacted soon, so they can choose the specification of their 7 port cylinder head.

I thought I was going to the other day on my CBR600F. The plugs are so inaccessible: You sort of wiggle them across the head, and then drop them, wait a second or two for the clunk as it hits the bottom of the cavity. Then try and feed a plug socket, then a short extension in, then click them together with the ratchet. Luckily, and against my general luck, all went in well.

Incidentally, on the VF400, to replace the front two spark plugs, you started by removing the tail light lens at the other end of the bike. Just for comparison with fitting a speedo cable to a Mini. Or changing out the radiator.
