Hey Everyone,

Has anyone considered a LPG conversion on their mini? How much would it cost? I am thinking of doing it for my starlet conversion ... is that a dumb idea?

LPG has a low octane rating, so it won't give anywhere near the performance BP Ultimate (98 RON) would. Also, I've heard LPG does more damage to the engine... Don't know how true that is though.

I wouldn't do it.

PS: You usually get it done to crappy family Falcodores etc...

plus, LPG is usually for cars that are gas guzzlers.... not something that's usually an issue with the mini..

The mixer designed by gas research is an excellent product. It is very tunable and with a properly set up engine will come close to ulp. I was thinking of putting my van on LPG

I was watching Current affair the other night and they were going on about the increasing petrol prices. They had an "expert" talking about LPG who said it was "100 octane" and doesn't leave any deposits in your engine, stating that as the reason taxis can do so many k's on an engine.

I have always been told that it is actually HIGHER octane than even premium fuel.

We built a 308 for straight LPG for my mates commodore a few years back.
Reasonably stock, just had the block decked and flat top pistons put in for increased compression - which it can handle because of the higher octane.

IT HAULED ARSE !!!!

The main reason LPG has such a bad reputation is that is is usually Dual Fuel cars which are the ones that run like crap. If you do the car up for straight gas it can run really well. All that needs doing is to bump up the compression, regraph the dizzy and if it's an old, leaded car, re-do the valves/seats. I think thats about all we did and this thing moved let me tell you

An excellent idea if you're going for high performance
Don't listen to all those "experts"
LPG typically has an octane rating of around 108, and is always well over 100
and it has a cooling effect on the charge temperature, which is excellent for high boost turbos (but causes icing on dual fuel setups).

Power only goes down if you go for dual fuel, as it is a compromise setup.
The Toyota engine would probably run just fine, butin older vehicles it is normally recommended to re-seat the valves & run a different grade of spark plug due to the higher efficience/greater heat produced during combustion.

The BIG bonus of going gor gas on a conversion is that YOU ARE EXEMPT FROM ADR EMMISIONS LAWS

The reason why it is usually used on "gas guzzlers" is that it takes a long time to recover the $2,000 cost from fuel savings on a small car.

My 2c worth.

I stand very much corrected then.

I know WA does it, but do other states have a government rebate if you convert to LPG?

Not targeting you Fat, just a lot of misconceptions out there about gas :)

If you're thinking about converting, the subsidy (in WA) is only short term & may be dropped at the politicians' whim. They promote it on enviromental grounds, but they really did it to prop up the conversion industry when the bottom fell out of it last year when the Federal Gov announced it was going to tax LPG. :)

Typically about $2,000, but should be less for a mini :D
Ring around, but you will need to tell them what you want,
e.g. gas only, tank size/shape/construction (polished stainless looks beaut & never needs re-testing, but $$$), size of motor.

My old 91 Falcon ute used to run on Lpg and after 426 000km the oil was still clear when I used to change it. On the downside Lpg provides no upper cylinder lubrication and dries out stem seals which means rebuilding the head more often, fitting a kit that injects a valve saving lubricant automatically which cost around $170 mark will fix that problem
