John - The reason I use a cat is that, according to Qld regulations, as Brad stated, is to comply with the emission regualtions in the year the motor was built. The standard one off the turbo is ultra restrictive.

Note : A cat is also considered a muffler so I would only need one other muffelr in line (at the tail end ala back-box).

You're shitting me.......you mean I got's to fit a cat to mine or just say the motor is out of an 85 model swift.

Also, go onto the austarlet forum. There's guys there with the TPS you need but they are asking me q's about what type is needed. I got NFI.

Hey John,

Yep, no sh#t. A cat you must have.

They can check your serial number on the engine block which will have the year of manufacture in the number somewhere.

Good thing is , it doubles as a muffler as well so only need a back-box.

Andrew

So Andrew, what your telling me is that essetially I could run a straight through after the cat. I would have thought a cat wouldn't have that much sound deading capacity. Black Box?

im only running a straight thru after the cat on mine, well its more a twin straight thru with 2 cannons together. see pic. It is pretty loud and gives me a head ache after 3 hours of consitant driving, but around town it is great. I think it is actually quieter in the cabin then alot of weber/dello powered minis i have been in.

It's quieter than my single box RC40...
Which was legal (89dBA) when I registered it!

yep mine is legal, engineer passed it as it was under the 94db limit. The turbo really sucks alot of the noise out of the exhaust, ran it without anything but the turbo connected once and it still wasnt that loud really.

Yep well there you go.

Cat and single back-box is just fine.

Woo hoo, yeah just about to put a deposit on a cat. It is a Catco hyperflo, the barrel kind with the highest flow rating. Not my choice but at 4" in diameter (cylindrical body) will make locating a damn sight easier. Price ouch $260 but this is the top of the range cat and RRP is $410 so I am reasonably happy. I know there will be a massive outcry so you've all got 48 hours to get me a better offer (and not off ebay I get nowhere on that thing... :x ).

Cheers Matt

PS. Pics when I get somewhere

I'm thinking of making an exhaust too, and wonder why the bends need to be mandrel bent. I know rollcages need to be mandrel bent for safety, but apart from the aesthetics of a crinkle-free bend why can't I bend the tube to suit, using those bottle jack thingies? There may be a good reason, but I'm not building a race car here.

It is very difficult to bend thin wall tubing without crushing it. It simply wil not work in your normal pipe bender. I have heard of people packing the tube with sand etc etc but with mandrel bends available I just wouldn't bother.

Another place to look for mandrel bends is truck shops.

Hey Metalfab,

The wall thickness of the 316 stainless I intend to use is 1.63mm (not even sched. 5).

Should be fine to mandrel bend and maybe evn pipe-bend to about 5 degrees or so.

Comments.

Yeah mandrel bending will be A-OK. 5 degrees is bugger all, it should be OK. I'd be interested to see how it goes bending even a 5 deg. in a pipe bender. It would be a PITA to cut a mandrel bend and weld it in for a 5 deg. bend!!!

Yeah true, but then if you have a 180 degree mandrel you can cut to any degree and then butt weld.

I have a choice of LR and SR bends as well, so any eventuality should be covered.

Flanges are dear though. About $12 per flange.

If you only want 5 deg, why not just spot heat the inside radius of pipe with oxy, then wrinkle bend it.
No loss of section as it will wrinkle outwards.
