I'm thinking of making an exhaust too, and wonder why the bends need to be mandrel bent. I know rollcages need to be mandrel bent for safety, but apart from the aesthetics of a crinkle-free bend why can't I bend the tube to suit, using those bottle jack thingies? There may be a good reason, but I'm not building a race car here.

It's an aerodynamic thing... The smoother the bend the less pressure build up in the pipe and therefore the less backpressure that exists. Basically mandrel bent pipes will give you better performance. Depending on how many bends you have in your plumbing you probably wounldn't be able to notice the difference, unless your on the track or 1/4 mile.

Just my 2 cents..

Thanks for all the viewpoints. Just thought I was getting ripped off. You have convinced me so I will be having a go. Also as regards the Cat Brad is right if it had a cat it has to stay. Also brad you had a notch made in your back brace to allow for th exhaust is that because it was too close to the ground otherwise? And finally why can't I weld the exhaust up with gasless MIG? The welds don't look as good but this is no show pony...

Just a thought, but if you're looking to do it on the cheap, why don't you get a complete used system of a bigger car nissan, subie, etc :?:

Most of them these days are factory stainless steel, the stock systems they pull off to fit those 3" + canon mufflers should be cheap enough at your local performance exhaust place, and should have more than enough bends for you one you cut it down to size.

But then you would need a S/S mig wire...

Yeah that's the only trouble AWD is while I think I have got the gist of welding mild steel, I think I would have to go back to the drawing board for S/S. I know someone said Repco, do they supplied mandrel bends? Also I should let everyone know that there are only two places in Canberra that do mandrel bends. It is a closed shop here so they can charge what they like obviously places like Syd & Melb have greater competition hence the much better prices.

Anyone want to recommend a place that would sell and ship to Canbra a set of mandrel bends + CT9 flange? Otherwise I will go with the $420 for bends, flange and cat from Liverpool Exhaust.

Have done (when I was a wee pillock & bored'n'broke one weekend).

Not worth the effort unless you must have the "original look" thing.
Not much gain - they're not that good a design

Go the extractors

Mike

Yep notch was made in the rear engine mount holding bar for the exhaust to sit closer to the car... My engineer did not check it but there is a legal requirement of 80mm???? from the ground i think.

I think Brad it is actually 100mm which means when you wack 2.5" (65mm) through there it takes out alot of that. Bugger I might have to get the angle grinder and the welder out again!

Matt,
When i had my exhaust done at the carco centre exhaust shop in belconnen i remember they had a few Mandrel 'doughtnuts' on the front bench. Also theres supposedly a custom parts fabricator in the back of the shop there... makes alloy header tanks and intercoolers etc.

hope this helps

Mick not the headers they're going to remain (for the moment), I am talking about fromt the turbo back. Mate I would have seriously good to start welding up my own manifold. Maybe later when I have nothing to lose...

Matt,

I intend to do a 3" stainless system for "?l Gato". I have this national deal going with a company called ProChem. They make stainless stell pipe/fittings/fixings etc for the petroleum and gas industry. Anyway, the deal I have is really rather good in terms of price, so I could deal you in if you wanted to go 316 stainless route.

Just a note, my intention was 3" off the turbo (to get ready for the GT25R), through a 3" cat and then split twin 2.5"system out the back. ProChem could supply all pipe, fittings, flanges, reducers etc for my entire system. All I had to do was cut to size and weld up. A 3" cat on eBay was $100 last time I looked.

BTW - You would have to use Argosheild with the stainless wire, and you are dead right with the 100mm clearance to the ground from any point under the car.

John - The reason I use a cat is that, according to Qld regulations, as Brad stated, is to comply with the emission regualtions in the year the motor was built. The standard one off the turbo is ultra restrictive.

Note : A cat is also considered a muffler so I would only need one other muffelr in line (at the tail end ala back-box).

Anyway Matt - let me know

Andrew
