had my timing with the pulsar dizzy set so that it was only minimumly kicking back on start up, but there was not even the slightest bit of pinging even when puting it in 4th and flooring it from say 1000 it wouldn't ping! so i figured it should advance it so i rigged up a start button that could work with out the ignition so i could get it spinning then kick on the ignition. (i killed a starter pinion last thursday so that is the main reason for the start button.)

the more i advanced it i noticed no noticable power increase but still no pinging!
out of curiosity i put the timing back to where it was before and more some retarded so i could start normally. and hey presto MASSIVE power increase with a decent flat spot to say 2000 grand then it just goes nuts!

and this is retarded from kickback point!

is this just some sort of absurdity with my engine and it's own little quirks or has anyone experienced something like this?

(i never got it to ping ever either no matter how hard i tried)

cheers steve

Mine will ping if I give it enough advance.. but it's hard to hear over the sucky noises from the Dellorto.
Too much advance will make it run rough up high. If the timing is right, an RE13 cam in a 1275 should get out of bed at 2700 approx and haul ass until 7000 or more.

I'm not suggesting you advance this far, but mine (with bathtubbed 10.7:1 head) is right with ~40* maximum.
If I reduce it, I lose power.

the flat spot could have gone to 2700 i am not too sure i don't have a tacho at the moment 2k was just my estimate! the power just kept going and going just didn't run out at all after that initiial flat spot though.
i'll have another play at fine tuning it tommorrow when i have daylight on my side again.

i only have a hif44 which is a bit noisey with the hp filter i have on but not laud enough to overpower pinging.

edit: i have stock combustion chambers, only shaved to up comp to approx 10.2

i noticed the same sort of thing with mine now i got a hif44

not much power down low but when it gets to 2000~2500rpm it just goes nuts and keeps going nuts although iv been changing gears at around 5000 its really mad to drive once it hits this spot although it can be a bit annoying taken of if you have the revs a little low it just wont go

That is what I found when I put on My HIF it is a pain when I had twins on and it had more low down tourque but I have lived with that now and some people think it has a Turbo and that is turbo lag.

it's not the flat spot i am concerned about, actually i am not concerned about anything for that matter just thought it was really odd that it went harder when i retarded the timing and that i could not get it to ping!

that flat spot was only really accentuated once i retarded the timing aswell.

You must only have a low compression ratio as Mine is 9.75:1 and i have had it ping on Premuim Fuel but I reatrted the time to stop it unit til we got 98 rating fuel in Bundy. Now it is all sweet.

should be aprox 10.2:1 compression i was told by the head guy.

i am planning some more head work in the next few months so i will do a more accurate calculation when the head is off again.

he came to work and checked the pistons and whether the block had been decked etc while the head was off.
