I looked through my right hand tanks and note that there is two styles. Anyone know which is which?

Mate I don't know how to post. I tried drag and drop but no luck. One style has a hole in the seam at the top and bottom of the tank and others don't

There is a where the 2 halves lookto have the seam oxy welded and the later style roller welded not sur of the change point l would guess mk2

My 1966 S came with its RH tank oxy-welded around the seams and no extra flange width for the nut/hole.
I assumed the tank had been sprung in an accident, since there was panel damage to the RH rear quarter, although no obvious damage to the tank itself.
Replaced it with an aftermarket copy which had the holes like later production.



Now I'm wondering if the old tank was original for its period.

So anyone have an idea on what is what with the two types of tanks?

Possibly jig holes for machine welding

There are two part numbers quoted for the right hand tank in Australian Cooper S and Clubman GT. The early tank is 21A1317 and then 21A2183. The latter was introduced into production in November 1968 so towards the end of the Mk 1 Cooper S.

It's possible, maybe likely, that the early tank has the gas welding along the edge and the later tank the roller welding along the flange to seal the two halves. The drawings don't differentiate on the type of weld with both simply saying "seam welded".

In a post listed today in 'Mini Chat', timmy201 included a link to an old posting of a U.S. restoration. It includes a photo of a 1966 Cooper S boot with a RH fuel tank that appears also to be gas welded around the seam.
