Hi All,

As the title suggests, I tried to drive the mini today, but cannot get into any gears other than 1st and 2nd.
So no 3rd/4th and no reverse.

This has all of a sudden happened, I didn't notice anything wrong last time it worked, no noises or crunches.

Wondering where I should start with this? This is a rod change box, is there a chance there is just something wrong with the selector??

TIA

Strange one. It may be in the selectors outside the gear box, or inside.
I would check the shaft going into the rear of the gearbox rotates when the gearstick is moved left to right.
A two person job in my books - one moving the gearstick left to right and one underneath checking rotation.
The gearstick movement from 1st to 2nd will see the shaft moving in and out of the gearbox, not rotating.

Can you select the gears when the engine is off?

I cannot select gears with engine on or off. Only 1st/2nd.

I will check the selector shaft for movement and report back.
I can move the shifter across to 3rd/4th position, but cannot move it up/down to engage. Same with reverse.

You probanly need to get under it and have good look and play around with the selector at the gearbox end, make sure nothing is loose or broken, see that the rubber cotton reel mounts are not stuffed. Then you may want to take the cover below the gear stick off and see if gears can be selected.
Last off you could disconnect the coupling at the box and see if you can get gears with just the stub, use a thin punch through the hole and rotate, push, pull etc to replicate gear shift. If it is seized with the coupling disconnected the problem is likely in the gearbox.

Hi All,

Had a bit more of a play around, and was able to get 3rd/4th, just struggled to find them.
The gear shift has become really loose and sloppy.

Was still unable to get reverse though. I did climb under and take the inspection cover off, and found the issue.

Luckily a cheap fix!

I think I want to fix up the loose shift though, not sure what I need to do for that. All the mounting bushes for the housing seem solid, not sure on the internals?
Can't find much info on them in the manuals.

Thanks
