Apart from the stamped numbers on the left, what is the difference from a Mini 4 synchro box and a Coopers S 4 synchro box?

The 1st motion shaft gear with 18 teeth is a major difference and a Cooper S Laygear.

Your title says "case differences" and you said "apart from the stamped numbers", the answer is "absolutely nothing"

Just want to be sure that a non FAXE case is ok to fit a Mk2 engine.

Yep, no problem at all.

The only tangible difference in the gearbox case assembly is the diff side plate covers, but obviously they're very interchangeable. I have pot joints on my FAXE case
