So I have a mini with a KG Engineering 5 speed box in it. Unfortunately it's now stuck in 5th gear, whilst still seemingly able to select other gears. Engine and box out soon to inspect.

Anyone had experience with these things?

no experience with one but I'd be keen to have a look - hopefully all that's happened is that the 5th gear selector has lost its grip on the selector rod...

Yeah, hopefully it's something simple like that mate.

I'll take some photos and post them here.

Photos would be great.

Thanks Tim.
Very interesting things were being tried on minis.

Got the box apart.

Broken 3/4 selector. Nothing to do with the 5th gear. Was actually stuck in 4th.

Just an acknowledgement of the quality of the KG SC drop gears I ran in a circuit car. They were marked as made in 1995 so Andrew may very well be your good work. ( The ceased duty in 2019 -but are still in excellent nick.)

Really nice looking bit of gear, would love to have a look at all of the parts..

Assuming
- there's a new mainshaft and layshaft.
- the new layshaft must have teeth on it to lock the old laygear to the new 5th gear laygear
- the selector hub for 5th gear looks the same as 3/4 gear
- 5th gear looks like it's made out of an alternative gear and a 3rd gear with the gear itself cut off
- there must be a selector hub lurking under the 5th gear selector hub
- there's a bearing hub bolted into the space between the speedo drive and 5th gear, probably an input shaft bearing in there
- the new layshaft sits in a bearing in the new 3rd motion bearing retainer plate

I guess the tricky part is locking the two parts of the laygear together... (other than the whole thing being very clever obviously)

I remember seeing KG 5 and 6 speed straight cut boxes at Mini Kingdom opposite Bankstown airport years ago. Drool drool...
I think they were all straight cut gears? Matt Read had a couple once.

Didn't look like this one, they were race boxes, all their gears were in the RH side of the box. 4th gear 1:1.

No I don't think so.
Matt Read says he didn't like the 6 speed, he reckons each set of gears is like an oil pump and adds drag.
