Currently running a 15 ac Lucas unit with 8tr regulator will a 17 acr alternator be ok to change to ?

Sure. Just leave the external regulator unplugged. Or not, as it won't matter. Only the brown/yellow charge indicator wire is connected to the alternator. Tape the other wire up.
