Thanks Clive.
That would be helpful. I have twin tanks and a pump on the subframe.
I could run it anywhere and it would be fine, but I'd like to replicate how it was done originally where possible..
Obviously I'm aware the the tank and pump are not original to this car though :)

Are you using the SU Electric Pump?

Here is a photo of a 1968 rear to compare with. If you are using the SU pump with breather rivet it is easier to fit the breather hose before the subframe goes in.

The pump is mounted via this bracket to the subframe.

Gto has sent a better photo than what I was sending. Also the mounting bracket for the SU pump. Good point about the breather vent too.

I have another assembly question (and many more to come I'm sure!)

I can't see anything that retains the RH tail light harness where it crosses the boot near the hinges.
I've searched for and looked at so many pics but cannot find anything. Surely it was retained by something and didn't just sit there!?!? :)

There should be a couple of tabs spot welded to the boot floor that fold up and keep the harness held against the rear of the body. On a Cooper S it also goes through the boot board support brackets.

As Winabbey said there are 6 tabs spot welded to the boot floor.

Thanks guys. I expected to find tabs exactly like that. It was a bit dark, but I ran my hand along there this arvo and couldn't feel anything, hence the question.
Maybe they have been flattened out, I'll check again tomorrow.
Thanks again.

You could make tags with 90 degree bend, paint them and pop rivet to floor. Wire would probably hide rivets.

This is exactly what I did immediately after posting the above message :). A bit of brush-on seam sealer hides the rivets.

Well done, good luck with the rest of the resto.

Thank you :)

Next question.

This 67 Deluxe has the washer pump on the LHS of the column in it's own little bracket, just as the manual shows, but it also has one on the RHS where I believe 'S' cars had a heater/fan switch.

What was the RHS switch likely to be in a Deluxe with no evidence of ever having had a heater?

So I now have the body sitting on a 2 post hoist and have made new brake and fuel lines and installed the steering rack..

I've rebuilt the engine and front subframe and they are ready to go back together.

Given that I'd like to avoid paint damage, am I better off installing the engine from above or below?

From underneath I have the hoist and a hydraulic lift table to use. From above, I would hang it from a forklift tine with a tilt adjuster, so I'm pretty well equipped to do it either way in a proper manner.

Which way requires the least disassembly of the engine? Rad, alternator etc?

Ben, my view is limited as I have only ever removed or installed engines from above over the last 50 years.
I normally install an engine by myself, the first photo shows the engine with no ancillaries attached, I do remove the oil filter and fit the engine mounts and attach the speedo cable. The engine bay needs to be protected, I use cardboard sheets and masking tape. The engine needs to be tilted to fit in and you risk damaging the firewall and the slam panel and/or the front of the gearbox housing fins if not careful. I install all of the ancillaries later.
With the equipment you list, I'm guessing the bottom up way sounds a better option as long as you can line the body and subframe easily. I also note that the subframe that I fitted to the red car was an extremely tight fit and took a lot of persuasion by me and a friend to fit to and get it in place. I don't know if the motor and subframe could be easily installed from below on this particular car. The car had some front bodywork done by the PO. This contrasts to the white car where the subframe was an easy fit.

Hopefully others will express their views. Good luck.

The last 2 times I’ve put in engines we had the radiator attached and went in from the top. It wasn’t much harder than without the radiator, and much easier than installing the radiator afterwards
