New Wipac Flasher.jpg
Checked out a few things this morning.
The old flasher is still working fine except that the LH dash indicator light does not come on. I am suspecting the lamp has fallen out of it's holder. The lamps have two wires running to them.

Tried the new Wipac Flasher again which I only received yesterday. When I turn on the ignition, same as before - RH indicator light comes on, dims when I indicate right and goes out when I indicate left. Inspected this new flasher to find that one of the tabs has been pushed into the flasher unit and has not come out. No wonder it is not working. Please refer to the photo attached. Typical of the quality of parts we are receiving these days. I note Morbo 28 that your Narva Flasher was made in Korea. Maybe we should get them to manufacture our rubber suspension parts.

Tried the old original Lucas flasher and it was as dead as a doornail.

Before I purchased my new flasher, the old one was displaying similiar symptoms to what this new flasher with a terminal pushed in. I am wondering if I have a short somewhere. Seems weird, but it it all a learning curve. Certainly satisfying when you work it out.

Is there a method to check the old Lucas cannister before instalation?

Issue resolved. I put everything back together and still has issues. Wiggled the wires and it righted itself. Turned out to be a suspect wire between the in-line fuse and the flasher. Installed a new in-line fuse and associated wire.

Thanks for the comments about the location of the green dash indicator lights. Don't know what I was thinking, that they the bulbs in the speedo.

Regards Fritz

I am a new member having recentlly purchased a nicely restored 1972 Mini Clubman.

I am concerned that the turn indicators are not self cancelling. On removing the plastic cowl around the steering wheel I found that there is a "T" shaped machine screw threaded into with a tapped hole in the steering column. This seems to bear on two plastic claws which are part of the turn indicator mechanism to cancel the signal.

When the wheels are straight ahead (and the steering wheel also in the straight ahead position) the "T" is at 7 or 8 o'clock when viewed from the driver's seat.

The questions are a) where should the "T" be for wheels straight ahead? (I suspect that the turn indicators are self cancelling but for most turns the steering wheel does not move sufficiently to cancel because the "T" is in the wrong place) b) if my suspicions are correct, do I need to re-orientate the steering column at the rack and c) is this a big job?

The cancelling bolt should be in the middle of the switch between the 2 fingers.

Make sure the bolt for the bottom clamp is in correctly when refitting the column.

Auster3,

Not sure if your setup is the same as mine, but adjustment is real easy. Just loosen the bolt that holds the steering column near the dash and you can then rotate the outer metal part of the column to suit.

Also check that the T piece is level with the fingers so it makes good contact. Sometimes the T is too high or too low and doesn't click against them. If that's the case, just move the column up or down a tad.

You'll be only moving the outer metal part of the column, not the inside, so no need to touch the bolt on the bottom of the steering column.

Cheers, Rocky

The T piece is attached to the inner column so moving the outer column won't do anything to fix the problem.

The inner column hasn't been installed in the correct position. If you look at the clamp that attaches to the rack pinion at the base of the inner column I'm guessing the bolt is across the top. It should be across the bottom, resulting in the T piece being at about 2pm.

If the inner column position is wrong it may have been done by someone not familiar with the Mini steering system, in which case there may be other things not done correctly. Probably the most important of these is to ensure the two U bolts holding the rack are loose when lining things up, otherwise there will be side pressure on the pinion. Next of importance is ensuring the splines on the pinion and the mating clamp are sharp and in good condition, otherwise the column may slip in the pinion with potentially disastrous results.

If you are unsure about all of this I strongly suggest you get a good Mini mechanic to check the components before reinstalling.
