Hi everyone,
I picked up a head that had a gouge in the chamber, that ran slightly into the valve seat. It looked like an angle grinder or something had hit it.
I ground it down to get rid of it, but to a depth that left only a smidge of the original seat.

Could it be used if new seats were cut?

I know it would pose problems with rocker geometry etc, but I figured if I use shims under the rocker posts and Cooper S valves, maybe???

Just recut the seats. Or fit unleaded inserts.

Thanks Doc, that’s good to hear. Do you think the rocker angles etc will be workable?

What is the casting number on the head, near the rocker posts?

It’s a 12G940. (12938 or something near the thermostat)

OK. It's a Morris 1100S or 1300 auto head.
Just recut the seats, or get unleaded exhaust inserts fitted. Use standard 1100S valves or MK 2 S inlets if you prefer.
Shims are available to pack up the rockers if needed (usually not with a modified cam), also to pack up the springs to optimise assembled height.
