Hi guys looking at getting one of the following which would be better out of the two and average price to pay: 12G206 or 12G295 for a 998 engine. Thanks for your help.

Both are very old heads, pre 1970, check carefully inside for bad corrosion.
They were more prone to cracking also.
206 had no inlet location rings, 295 did. Otherwise are basically the same.
I would rather get a 12G202 head and have it ported. You can achieve better exhaust flow.
Far more 202 heads were produced, so are cheaper to buy.

Hi yes have been told that this can be done on a 202 but requires a higher cost labour wise. Does it matter about the inlet rings or should u go for a 295 as they have these?

Inlet rings are only useful if you are running a 998 Cooper or a Cooper S manifold. Twin HS 2 or HS 4. Other manifolds locate on the studs instead.

There are a couple of videos here from a guy in the UK that specialises in cylinder heads. He shows a 12G295 and what needs to be done to bring them back to working order

I did a 202 with Graham Russel. If you give him (or anyone that do mini heads) a call he’ll be able to give you the best option and a price. You should be able to get a 202 head for under $100

Check out Graeme Russell's website he covers off heads in detail. I reckon you should stick to southern hemisphere tuning advice we are lucky to have such talented tuners down under.

Exhaust gas flows anticlockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Ring the various minishops for a price and see what is available on Facebook. Gumtree or Ebay.

The 295 can be hard to find and maybe $750+ for a good one.

The 202 is cheap but you need to factor in the porting and larger valves.
