I see , the vin is 022 X2S2 M10/ #### , does this sound right for a Aussie Clubman ? Which number would indicate what year it was built in ?

The 022X started in March 1977 so the prefix should end in 09 for the 998cc engine.

Does the prefix start with 022A or 022D?

I did think of that but the X was a bit of a variable, they sometimes threw it in when they didn't know what to do. That code is related to manual and auto and ADRs.
The first one I have in the Leyland Minis is July 76 when they introduced ADR27A but they could have thrown one in earlier.

Sounds plausable. From the ADR plate photos I have the last 022D was 3/77 and the first 022X was also 3/77. I will be happy to be corrected so I can update my files.

This was a one off from what I can see. It is the earliest ADR27a plate I have seen.

Thanks mate. So would that be classed a stamping mistake because the 022D was made from 74 to 77.

They changed from A to D when ADR27 came in.
I'm guessing they possibly meant to change again at ADR27a but things got mucked up and they kept going.

That's not to say there aren't other early plates with a X.

Yes, this sounds right for a Leyland Mini S

It is a Leyland Mini S, it is not a Mini Clubman. I know it looks and feels like a Clubman but Leyland changed the name in 73.

From those numbers we can tell it was made between March 73 and July 75.

Does the car have a "compliance plate" riveted to the inner fender on the RHS?

I can tell you the build date with all the numbers.

Let me take a photo when I get home

I’d guess at 1974 based on the applicable ADR’s (4a was 1974 only from what I can tell). Strange that the date says “16/5” and not the month and year

Holy misprint, hey 'gtogreen1969' take a look at this!

Where the 16/5 is stamped it is supposed to have a date like 5/75 meaning May 1975. The 1974 cars used a code like 11/74/47 meaning the car was made in November 1974 in the 47th week of the year. This plate is unique!
The ADR numbers point to it being a 74 car.

If the blanked out numbers have 4 digits it will probably be between April and August, if it had five digits it will probably be between August and November.

As an approximate guide, if the number is near...
7500 = March/April 74
8000 = April 74
8500 = May 74
9000 = May 74
10000 = August 74.
