Yeah think I'll have to. On the bench it turns smooth and quiet forwards but clicks when turned backwards. I imagine this is normal. I've had a look at the regulator and it was looks clean as a whistle, no burns no corrosion. I'm going to put it back together tomorrow and run the car in the driveway for a while, when it makes the noise, I'll do the screwdriver test and check the battery voltage.

Thanks, I understand the reasoning about taking the fan belt off to identify the sound, I don't think that'll work in this instance. The car stops making the sound when I turn off and restart. So I'd need to run the car on the battery for 30 mins or so to replicate similar conditions, I don't want to cook the motor.

Have the generator on the work bench and it spins with no unusual sounds. So... I took it apart anyway to have alook. The bearing looks OK with some light wear. The shaft end has some scoring I can feel with my thumb nail, the dark band is smooth. Anyway i'm putting it back on now. I'll run it up to temp and let you know the outcome.

What are those dark bands? Looks like the hard chroming has worn away.

Don't forget the piece of felt and a few drops of oil.

Well, I idled Floyd in the driveway for ten minutes, tried the screw driver method... awesome can hear everything! Generator sounds smooth, water pump making water pump sounds. I got carried away listening to clutch and the rockers. Fun! Anyway needing some shopping and beer I went for a spin. 20 minute round trip, not a problem! No noise at all!
Conclusion... Generator end bush must have been dry, I oiled it when I put it back together. It will probably go again so will have it replaced after the lockdown.

Yes I noticed it was dry when I pulled it apart. I think I'll investigate an alternator swap if reconditioning the generator is pricey, also it weighs a ton, alternator must be lighter right?
